There appear to be several like it on vcoins. But seller says it is of a certain mint and type? any ideas on this? Wouldn't it be worth way more then the asking price if this were true?[IMG]

Rare, maybe (I didn't check the accuracy of that claim)... but for it to matter in terms of price requires at least two people who care about and want that particular coin.

There are tons of rarities in the ancient coin world. I think that is wonderful! We can all own rarities :).

Ebay is chocked full of errors. Best to do your own research.

Could it be that its only one of two "known" in NGC plastic?

I found the listing, he did actually say only one other known and the NGC cert verification for ancients doesn't show a population report. So who knows

I did not look to see the difference from the several on vcoins listed. I posed the question to the seller- that several like it are on vcoins and he just responded that the type and mint is different. The poster avove are correct- price is dependent ond demand. For myself I am not a serious collector- just very curious.

I think the seller means it's only the 2nd known example that s/he owns.

  12. Although the "youth dismounting horse right" is more rare compared to "dismounting horse left," it is far from being only 1 of 2 known; even with the ivy leaf above the goat on the reverse. I would pay about 3.5% of his asking price. He is either severely dishonest, or severely misinformed. In either event, steer clear.

Even if true, I would say no. You will find several "unique" variations of devices, character directions, axis combos, and control marks with several ancient coins. This furthers many points by ancient collectors that they are relatively cheap as compared to moderns. There is a specific coin coming up in the next month at auction which is only 1 of 3 known and not only by mint/control marks or devices, but by specific denomination, die, and mint of the coin. Yet, at auction, in the last few years it has only gained $5500 at hammer. It should also be noted that it is in far better condition than the OP coin in question, furthering the argument that even if this Kelenderis Stater were 1 of 2 known, it would be worth far less than the seller's asking price.

I would post this coin as an example, but I don't want to be reported to the Trade Commission for collusion. :D

I believe very few claims by ebay sellers. If he believes it is only the second one known, why is it on ebay instead of a major auction house?

Was just a thought, but this is something well outside of my familiar area, so the education is much appreciated. As they say, we learn something new every day. Thank you, gentlemen.
