Saw @ancientcoinguru post an example of one of these, https://www.cointalk.com/threads/the-french-king-who-never-ruled.297993/ and got one. Simple as that! Got it cheap since the date is hard to make out. It looks to be 1598. When it comes to medievals, I am not much of a condition snob. Charles de Bourbon “Charles X” (1589 - 1590) FRANCE, Paris Catholic League Coinage AR Quart d'ecu O: CAROLVS. X. D: G. FRANCO. REX, Short cross with fleurs at the ends. Date around, with an initial mark of a cross. R: . SIT. NOMEN. DOMINI. BENEDICTVM., Crowned arms flanked by II on both sides, with an initial mark of a rose. 30 mm 9.53g Reference: DuP 1177
This series is a good one. There are coins of various rulers with the later ones dated and they can be had for reasonable prices. I have 3 or 4 of the type and when I look at them I think of the 3 Musketeers and the swashbuckling era.
Cool coin. At 30mm and 9.53 grams that is a big coin as well. I think of medieval coins being 20mm and paper thin, maybe I have the wrong impression?
Many of the larger denominations can be a bit thick. Have not seen any thick before the 1400s though, could be some do exist and are expensive?
