2010 saw the introduction of the Shield reverse Lincoln cents. There is always talk of eliminating the cent completely, since it still costs more to make than its value. Will this be the final form of the Lincoln, or will other changes still occur?

When this thread started back in 2011, the question was posed: "Do you like the new pennies". My answer was NO, but I got two of these anyway so I could display the obverse and the new reverse design.

How long the Lincoln cent will continue is anyone's guess, but this is where my collection ends.

Thank you all for following along for the last 102 days! I am out of coins, so this is the last of my year-by-year posts. It has been fun learning to photograph these coins and observing the changes through the years.

I took a chance and spent under $20 for this wreck of a coin, hoping to be able to conserve it a little and upgrade my set. I used distilled water, acetone, xylene, and VerdiCare. Since the coin was already damaged, I went ahead and gently massaged the surfaces with xylene-soaked Q-tips. I kept turning the cotton to avoid grinding dirt into the surface.

I may have revealed some existing scratches, but I think the result is good enough for what I started with. It is replacing the pockmarked one (post #4281) in my collection.

I like the woody effect on the obverse. It is not just striped, but shows an actual 3-D curved wood-like structure above the date.

Improvement is especially noticeable in the obverse motto, the fields to the left and right of the bust, all around the reverse rim, and of course in the green corrosion in ONE CENT.

A recent find in a bag of cents. Not a rare date, but pretty good shape for over 100 years old. 16S.jpg 16S..jpg

Got this out of a box of coins left to me when my paternal grandmother died about 30 years ago. I had no idea she (or my grandfather) collected coins, as I didn't start collecting until about that timeframe. The images are by Bob Campbell, and I think he did an excellent job.
