I just got a Buffalo last weekend and was wondering about the edges. I did not notice it when I bought it but there were some very slight dents on the top part of the reeded edge. I just called the dealer I bought it from and he said not to worry, that's what happens when they come in tubes and get knocked around a little. I know the Buff is 24 karat and softer than an AGE but it had me scared as far as sell back value. Anybody experience this?
Yes this is why the mint originally packages them in big plastic sheets versus tubing them because they ding so easily clanging around. Although I think that the mint is going to change to tubing them now too as I recall reading that somewhere. But many bullion dealers just cut them free and then just tube them up after purchase anyways. After all these are just bullion coins, albeit really nice looking ones. But the value when liquidating is determined by the gold they contain not any numismatic value so a few dings really shouldn't have much impact. Often times with the slabbing bullion craze that has taken over it's the imperfect coins with dents, dings, contact marks, etc that end up getting sold non slabbed by many dealers. Realistically if you must have a premium coin you should have bought a burnished version or a proof from the mint themselves or been really picky choosing in person. If you want perfection in bullion you have to be really careful when buying if you want decent looking coins as most dealers just treat bullion well like bullion and don't really handle them with extreme care.
Thanks for the great input, helped set my mind at ease. I was not wanting to pay a higher premium for a high grade Gold buffalo. I just wanted 1 ounce of 24 karat gold. New to the gold game and just needed assurance that everything is ok. I want to build a herd now.
They are absolutely beautiful coins. If you really like them but want more of a numismatic play the 2008 fractionals (1/2, 1/4, 1/10) and the 2013 reverse proof have maintained premiums pretty well. I wish the mint would bring back the fractionals maybe in 2018 for the 10 year anniversary would be nice imo.
If You are selling to a dealer, no problem. If You are trying to sell them to someone on eBay, it will not bring more than melt if You post good photos, which is kind of mandatory.
