Hello and welcome to the first round of the 2017 CoinTalk Coin Imperator Tournament. If you aren’t aware of the tournament then you can read about it here. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/an...intalk-coin-imperator-tournament-2017.293824/ Please take a minute to appreciate the excellent coins shown below and cast your votes. A BIG thanks to both our contestants for sharing these cool examples! #7 @panzerman AV Dinar ND 8.11g. 26mm. Boxlo Mint Hormizd I Kushanshah 270-300AD obv. King standing left/ holding trident/ sacrificing at altar rev. Shiva standing in front of bull "Nandi" ex: Gorny&Mosch Price: $1,920 (recent purchase) Why It’s Cool: The Sasanians conquered vast parts of the declining Kushan Empire in period 250-300AD. Since the Empire stretched from modern day Syria to India, the King of Kings in Ctesphion appointed a junior Prince to rule the ex: Kushan lands. Hormizd I thus took on that role. The Kushano-Sasanians copied a lot of the Kushan coin designs/ seems these Princes were into body building! #10 @Ancient Aussie JULIUS CAESAR, 44 BC. AE Dupondus, 45 BC. Mint in Italy, Rare Roman Republic Dia.: 26 mm Wt.: 13.05 g Obv.: Bust of Victory right Rev.: C CLOVI PRAEF Minerva advancing left, snake, spear and shield. Ref.: Cr 476. Ex Klassische Munzen Price: $390 (purchased 2011: Inflation adjusted to 2017 = $422) Why It’s Cool: One of my more historically important coins as it exemplifies Caesar's victories over Pompey, specifically at the battle of Pharsalus where Pompey was decisively defeated capturing 20,000 men with Pompey fleeing to Egypt where he was executed. Footnote...C. Clovius could be one of the six prefects "pr و fecti Urbi" appointed by Caesar before his departure for Spain in order to fight the Pompeian forces. This character was later governor of Cisalpine Gaul. The comment section of this thread will be open for shameless lobbying, good natured discussion and for anyone to explain their voting logic if they choose. I know that I don’t have to tell you fine, upstanding ladies and gentlemen this but remember to keep the banter civil, respectful and POSITIVE lest the mods become upset with us. Remember this is all in fun and will benefit a good cause no matter who wins …and of course PLEASE post your relevant examples pile on style!
Both of these coins are amazing. I'd love to post a pile on but I have nothing that is worthy lol That gold Dinar is beautiful panzerman. The history factor on that JC dupondus is super cool AA.
That is a beautifull coin AA! Julius Caesar certainly was one of the best military leaders in the ancient world, probably up there with Alexander III/ Hannibal/ Cyrus the Great/ Belisarius
what i have saw julius is for me the winner so greeny i have not saw it and offcourse more older/ gold this only AD/ so perfect greeny BC out the ground i have my winner Greeny/ perfect snake to
Wow @panzerman what a sweet score! I think that dinar is beautiful, and a good price for the quality. I think @Ancient Aussie 's coin has more historical meat.
I love both coins ... panzerdawg => here is my bronzy-version of your sweet coin ... Oh, and Ancient Aussie => that big fat dupondius is definitely phat!! (great coin) Fantastic match-up ... cage match!!
It ain't over til yo' Mama sing!! Curious? => why didn't you toss your Gordie-III-ness into the ring, my friend?
Because I volunteered to donate to the winner's charity of choice too, along with the OP. It's not fair for me to let everyone know I volunteered to match the donation money (even though it's not my contest), and then tell them to vote for my coin. It would cast a shadow over every vote cast for me.
I would have doubled down on my initial pledge in a heartbeat in order to see some of your great coins in this thing! Julius Caesar seems very popular in this first round
