Had a busy buying week. Bought 2 1878P raw long nock Morgans, but haven't received them yet. Not many possible VAMS in that shallow of a pool with 7 TF. Pretty certain I nailed both of those. But that will be a thread for later. Pilfered this one tonight. GTG. Not a poll, never did one before. 1901S I already have this coin in PCGS AU53. I saw this one and had to have it. What say ye?
very very nice and not easy on the wallet either in MS and this one IS MS I see no rub or wear in these pics but there are a fair number of bag dings I would call her 62/63 by todays standards but in that slab with those dings I would say the label reads MS60
I'll just say that one is getting cracked out. Let the professional guessing begin. PCGS graded this one I sent in last year. They gave this AU53.This was my benchmark.
I can't say for sure on the first coin just can't see it good enough. The second I can see at 53, but the first coin - nope. I can't tell if it 58 or what higher. I think the first coin should be between 58 to 63 depending on hits, luster a touch of wear any place on the coin.
I am at AU58 also, maybe a MS60. In that era MS61-MS63 was still quite baggy, and the coin was full of luster. Dull luster could get you into the MS grades, to no benefit of your pocketbook though at MS60. AU58 would be the sweet spot for this coin IMO.
I''ll give it till tomorrow to post the unspoilered photo. Maybe a few more will throw their guesses into the mix. It hasn't even shipped yet.
Interesting...that is lower than I figured...does it show impaired luster? And what is the halo around the second star after "UNUM"? Is that just the photo or on the coin?
I noticed that as well, (photo, still don't have it). I suppose it's possible it was net graded. I'll take my chances and crack it out (maybe). Even a gold CAC bean's not fixing this grading disaster.
And now you see why I bought it. Paid PCGS 53 list price money for it. This is one of those hard decisions on whether to resubmit for cross with minimum stated grade or crack out. ?? What would the forum do? I've seen some dealer on YouTube make a living cracking out OGHs for upgrades.
Technically a gold CAC is worth more than a 2 point upgrade in many cases but that is in large part because it is so hard to get the gold sticker. I think your best path depends on what the coin looks like in hand. If it is an upgrade candidate, it would still need to increase enough to make the grading fee worth it (along with losing the old holder premium).
That's why I'll consider resubmitting with a minimum grade of AU58. The difference in value is quite considerable. What I don't know, if the grader will "defend the honor" of the TPG in that case
I can’t tell you what I’d because I need that coin in hand. If I did decide to resubmit, I’d crack it out myself and just submit the coin.
