Oh my gosh, this is actually really big news. They've always been very tight-lipped about that. I can't wait to see the data that comes from this. I just ran a couple of my coins to confirm - yes, it's true! I wonder what they are saying about it over on the NGC forums?

A member over there says they noticed it "a few weeks ago." Meanwhile, in the past few days, NGC seems to think I'm a "new member" and sends me daily emails encouraging me to check out all the benefits on their website. I joined 7 years ago. I'll have to dig up my NGC slabs and look them up. Edit: looks like my oldest is 22 years ago. Interesting but I'm not sure what it does for me.
I did a quick run through of the NGC slabs I have, not looking at any I submitted or ones with the QR code on the label as I know those are recently graded. I suspected my oldest would be between three coins and I was correct. Interestingly, my oldest grade date was 1997, though it was re-holdered into a red edc plug slab, but the cert # when searched shows the original date and NOT the re-holder date. The second oldest is the same coin, different variety, still in the original holder, graded less than a year after the first one, but in 1998. @geekpryde I have a gen 2.0 41'D embossed rev logo. It was produced for about a month Nov/dec 87. Same as you there isn't a grade date. If yours has a embossed gold logo on the exterior of the slab it is a gen 2. 122315-003 Description 1941 D 10C Grade MS 65
Couldn't somebody run these "grade dates" and the numeric grades through an AI and (somehow?) finally show evidence of gradeflation, or perhaps other changes in grades for particular coins over time?
Not easily... First off when a coin is regraded, the original record is no longer visible. Second, not just because the population distribution seems to have changed over time... correlation is not causality. All 1904 New Orleans Morgan dollars are low grade and incredibly rare. External event somebody finds bags of 1,000 mint state pieces in the treasury. The average grade is now MS63 or something like that. That's not grade inflation that's external information. Third it's actually fairly difficult to extract the data from their database. You need the certificate number and grade and there's no index by coin number that we have access to. Fourth they rate limit the number of queries you can make. 5th just because you have somebody grading from photographs or some AI grading from photographs doesn't mean that the number that you're thinking proves inflation is correct. It could just be that the photograph quality got better over time.
