So just for some fun - lets say I hypothetically I have 3 liberty nickels - one goes into the type set. One I am keeping, one goes into type set listing and one does not belong. Which of these three would you add to the type set? Assume all are CAC coins - but not the same grade. One is 64, one 65 and one a 67. Maybe some searching on this site would show you which one I added to the type set. Which would you add and why? I was thinking about this earlier today when I saw some liberty nickels - they were very nice coins. I got this weird thing with liberty nickels (and some other coins) all because of an article I ready 15 to 20 years ago.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the 1904 you show. The 98 is perfectly fine, and given the grade choices you show might actually be the highest graded. However, based solely on the single image, I like the 99 the best. I think it has better luster, and I'm personally a fan of the color. There are a few small contact marks, but there is something about that green/lavender color on these Liberty nickels that gets me. 100%, its the 99 for me.
I like the 1898 the most because of the toning. Not as well struck as the 1899 but it has a nice look.
physics-fan3.14 got it in one. I figured the 1904 would not be picked, and it is basically a $100 coin. The 1899 is MS65 (and thanks to another post I see it was graded in 2003) and basically a $500 coin. The 1898 is the MS67 and it does a have a lot of luster - but the strike does it in for me. This coin has sold for between about 6500 and 9500 for the last 3 auctions it was in. And like I said I read an article that talked about the strike 15-20 years ago - and the weird thing I zero in on is the reverse, the corn. I need to see some kernels - I bought that 1899 about 7 years ago as soon as it was posted. I saw the strike and boom gotta have it.
Technically you have two types there so you’ll have to keep two of them. I would pick the 1899 because it’s a cool year - the odometer is rolling over. Plus I like it the best.
I'm stuck between the 98/99.. the 04 beautiful but the chatter on the cheek kills it for me at least for the type set... I think in the end I would use the 98 for the type set I have this pretty MS65 for my big type set (might also explain why i like the 98 for it's bit of color too many bright white coins makes a set boring lol
I would choose the 1899 because of the luster. I don't care for the 1904 at all because the marks on the chin are too distracting. The high grade 1898 is rather muted.
