Hello everyone, No Metal Detecting thread for this weekend. Saturday, I dedicated it to spend time with my 31-year-old son and 24-year-old daughter. Family time is important! We had lunch together then went to see Spiderman:Brand New Day. Great movie! I can now say that I have 41 years of collecting, studying and attributing true Mint Errors. But I prefer to call myself a specialist rather than an expert. The title of expert is for the likes of great guys such as Fred Weinberg and Mike Diamond! Here are two pictures I took with Fred several years apart. Every once in a while, I admit I might give the wrong (Just once or twice ) info or not know what the issue is. But I know enough to teach and explain those who are starting in the hobby of error and variety collecting. One of the issues that really annoys and worries me are new collectors who don't know much about true errors, and they assume that what they have is an error and even go as far as listing items on eBay with an error description. One of the most well-known items that I see listed are 'Missing Clad Layer' and Missing Clad Layers on both sides'.. horrendous! Here are two examples I did a screenshot of from eBay this morning It is so sad to see these listings because they are 100% incorrect and misleading The issue is actually Cupronickel clad coins with either long term Environmental Exposure or a reaction to a harsh chemical such as soda or coffee from a car cup holder. I sometimes send messages to these sellers to explain why their coin is not a Missing Clad Layer error. Some thank me and remove the listing, but most tell me to mind my own business and sometimes even curse me out. It is ridiculous the amount of people who just don't want to be taught or told that they are wrong and just want to scam new collectors. I have the same issue on many Facebook pages dedicated to Mint Errors and Varieties. I'm even a Moderator and known as a Top Contributor & Group Expert on some of the pages. But even there I get cursed, questioned on my expertise and even threatened .. Losers is what they are unfortunately. I have tried to explain that what they think they have is not correct, I tell them the process of how Missing Clad Layer clad coins occur. But they still insist that they are correct and that I am wrong. I have even explained how Environmental Exposure affects the Cupronickel Clad coins and even Nickels that are totally composed of Cupronickel. Oh yea, they call Brown toned Nickels 'Struck on Penny Planchets' I have even told them that I have 16 years' experience in Metal Detecting and show them many examples of my clad coins and nickels that have Environmental Exposure toning Here are many examples from my finds over the years. You can clearly see on the majority of the clad and nickels that the majority are toned Oh well, enough of my rant. I just hope that this thread can be used to show newbies and deniers to teach them a bit more of the issue whenever they post their clad coins asking if they are missing Clad Layer or even struck on incorrect planchet. I also want to share this great information from the err-ref.com website Missing Full Clad Before Strike Thanks for reading and I'm sure many of you experienced error specialists have had the same issue trying to explain the difference to others
By the way. My kids and I went to one of our favorite places to eat called.. Despaña Spanish style Bocadillos which are sandwiches and Bravas which are roasted potatoes with mayo infused with hot sauce.. Then afterwards we saw Spiderman. I won a stuffed soccer themed duck from a claw machine on my first try!
That looks like a really good meal and trip to the movies! I'm very much into the marvel movies but tend to watch them at home these days. I admit that I do miss the theaters, but I guess I'm just waiting for something to make me want to not wait and actually go to the theater release. And since you also mentioned people being in the wrong about missing clad layers and whatnot, I think this might be a good time to mention this particular quarter I have. I know it's clearly not missing a clad, as I've had several of those cross my path and they stand out very much so. This quarter, though, has me stumped. It seems to be in excellent condition but it's completely lacking that lustrous finish one expects to see on anything that's "modern pocket change." I'm putting up some pics from my phone, but the scope photos are where the real details are, and they show some very interesting surfaces. Maybe polishing lines (maybe something else?) going underneath of the devices, for the most part, but those pictures are locked away on my external hard drive which can now only be accessed from my wife's computer (mine is toast) and I absolutely loathe using hers. Lol! So, without further ado, here's today's new phone pics. The hair has practically no heavy circulation marks, same as the wings and breast feathers. If I can manage sometime this week, I'll see if I can locate my scope pics for this that show the lines I'm referring to and upload them here. It's also very slightly underweight at 5.53 grams, although I understand that is within tolerance. There's just something off about this coin and I can't quite put my finger on it. If you've got any knowledge to share, it would be very much appreciated!
Here's the thing, Ed. (Shiver - am I channeling @GDJMSP?) Think of all those glitzy, polished, AI-infused videos about STRIKING IT RICH FROM POCKET CHANGE! THIS QUARTER IS WORTH $1,000,000,000! IS IT IN YOUR POCKET? Now, imagine producing a similarly glitzy, polished, AI-infused video: THIS QUARTER SAT IN THE DIRT FOR THIRTY YEARS! IT COULD BE WORTH 25 CENTS - IF THE MACHINES WILL STILL TAKE IT! Which one do you think will get more clicks, and get pushed into more people's feeds, and send more people scurrying to find a helpful, welcoming place like CoinTalk? I'm afraid we're going to have to keep disillusioning people. A few of them will stick around to learn things, and maybe that makes it all worthwhile. A few will Escalate Quickly, and we mods will clean up the mess. I know it's super-tedious. I just tell myself that for every single thing that a person learns, there's got to be a first day that they learn it. I feel like I win if I can make that day a little more pleasant and less embarrassing for them. Sometimes it's really hard to remember that, though!
I've noticed an uptick in people thinking they have something valuable, usually an error, recently. I joined a lot of different coin-related FB groups, and very quickly left most of them. And I rarely comment anymore in the ones I'm still in. It gets tiring. There are so many people out there who think you're a jerk just for answering a question about a coin directly or even start up with name calling. Looks like you had a great time with your kids, by the way!
@paddyman98 . Looks like amazing time you all had. I only wish my special needs son would want to spend more time with me. He's 31 by the way. Many problems with his psychiatric well-being. One thing about being a dad is you never stop at it. Keep plugging away. You never know when you or they might get sick someday. I enjoyed your thread immensely! Thanks for sharing a part of your life.
