Seated dimes and half dimes without stars on the obverse were only minted in 1837 at the Philadelphia mint, in 1838 in New Orleans, and with stars thereafter. Too bad the mint did not continue the 'star-less' design. The obverse looks less cluttered and cameo-like. New Orleans minted dimes and half dimes starting in 1838. The half dime is scarcer and a type I have always liked. I have managed to add three examples to my collection over the years - none in high grade, but each interesting to me. The last one is pretty nice, but has a serious edge defect. Please post your star-less dimes or half dimes - would love to see them.
I imagine @Randy Abercrombie would be all over this design as well (the obverse anyway) . . . Although, compared to a Gobrecht Dollar, he may not enjoy looking at it through a microscope .
Wish I wasn’t on the road. I have several. @ToughCOINS is right. Since that Gobrecht dollar I been lusting for is out of reach, I pacify my list with these type one dimes and half dimes.
I dare say a Gobrecht is somewhat pricier than one of these? like the saying goes, Randy, 'you can't have it all'. Or, like I tell my wife about my lust for a Continental Dollar (which is neither continental nor a dollar, it seems) - 'if not in this life, then....
Those are beautiful and it makes me wish I had one in my collection but all of the ones I own have stars. Something else to add to my want list. Maybe @Randy Abercrombie will be kind enough to send me one for Christmas!
The "no stars" designs of the past (half dime, dime and Gobrecht $1) reminds me of the obverse of the 2018 Innovation Golden Dollars. Unfortunately, in my opinion, they started adding privy marks to the obverse in 2019. Anyway...I like the 2018 obverse design a lot. Here's mine and a pic from the Mint pages... Edit to add: Could do without the designers' initials too.
