I wish I had known him better but we all have so little time. We shared a great number of interests.

As a poster here and elsewhere I didn't always agree but I always had a lot of respect for his opinion. His leadership here and what he accomplished are immeasurable.

    RIP, buddy.

The sad news just breaks my heart. What a wonderful friend and mentor. Happy journeys, my friend.

I was there for that NGC luncheon. I think we had to talk Doug into joining us and Dena was kind enough to let him in as a guest. Chris (9ball something) was also there. I believe Bill Jones was also there. We all had our own little coin show, passing coins around the table.
At some point the folks at NGC came and ask us to keep it down. We were getting a bit loud. There were some really high end coins being passed around. Doug was a bit quite but if he knew you he might offer his opinion on your coin. There were some straight graded coins that he called cleaned and he was right. He was a tough grader and felt the services had became too loose. I felt the same and had to agree. He felt that the services had gone too far away from the ANA standards. I'll never forget the guy.

Haha, yep, that was exactly what happened. cpm9ball. That luncheon was one of my top coin show memories (even if we did get in trouble!).

Wow. Similar to many, I didn't know Doug personally, or even interact with him much on this forum. But having lurked around here since 2008, I can say he was truly a presence and helped make this forum a place that I wanted to keep returning to. It sounds like his passing may have even been a surprise to his family. Very sad. This forum will never be the same.

Just a funny PM I got from Doug once. He found it humorous that I had three safes in the bedroom that my wife barely tolerates. Dang, I am gonna miss him.

    Howdy Randy -

Last week or so I was searching I had posted years ago when I ran across a post I made clear back in 2002. And what was the first thing I thought of when I saw that post ? You ! :D

That's right buddy, it was you ! Ya see, over the time you have been a member here you have made numerous posts similar to these -

    https://www.cointalk.com/threads/buying-collecting-coins-a-addiction.369098/page-2#post-4982265

    https://www.cointalk.com/threads/you-know-youre-a-coin-collector-if.377336/#post-6952628

Now they weren't all the same, but they were along the same basic lines, the same basic idea as those two, that being the problems associated with a wife when you are a coin collector. Some of them were even about safes as I recall, and the fact that 2 was too many in your wife's eyes, let alone that 3rd one ! And yeah, I'm way more than familiar with those problems as I have had two wives, and more live-in girlfriends than I can easily count ! And safes, well hells bells buddy - I had 4 ! :D

And that brings us to this - I thought you would appreciate it. More than that even, I thought you'd downright like it. And more than that - I thought your wife would like it even more !!! :D :D :D So make sure to let her read it ;)
