Is anybody seeing any thing unusual price-wise with sub-1 ounce modern gold fractionals ?

I usually catalog them as spot gold with a modest premium but I've heard that some can be worth huge premiums to spot (like 5 ounce Silver Libertads) if collectors need them for a series. :cigar:

There is one dealer who I learned about from a PCGS forum thread who posts almost daily updates about his buy/sell prices. I was surprised to see that he actually pays less for fractional foreign gold (98%) vs 1 oz foreign (99%) and this spread has been consistent the last few months. However, he does pay more for fractional US Gold Eagles.

In general, I have seen higher premiums for fractional (buying and selling). And it made sense because there was often higher demand for the smaller pieces which were more affordable (even with the larger premium).

Some fractionals that have lower mintages (like Mexican Libertads) had a larger premium and continue to have a premium even with higher spot prices.

DDDDD, I think the hot fractionals were for Pandas. I'm on so many forums and posting on so many topics I had forgotten :D, thinking it was fractionals in general.

I remember now: Pandas. Because I have a few and I was shocked (and still dubious) that the premiums on my coins in the self-enclosed rubbery plastic would be selling at premiums quoted of 100-300% or so.

Always a good idea to save up for the 1 OZ, i call that the Costco affectt the more you buy the more you save also works in reverse :)

Absolutely....markups and margins on sub-1ouncers can be unreal.

At the time, I just couldn't afford a full ounce. And it was only about $1,500 an ounce I believe...maybe less.

Now ? With gold close to $5,000...even the 1/4 ouncer will run you $1,300 or more.

    I remember buying three 1-ouncers in 2002 for under $900 !!! :wideyed:
