    Fugger / Grafschaft
    AV Dukat ND (1565)
    Weissenhorn Mint
    Anton I Fugger 1540-65
There was a very rich merchant Jakob Fugger, he was the banker for Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich III and later Maximilian I, mainly to finance wars. Mercenaries were paid in gold coin.
HRE Karl V rewarded the Fugger Family by giving them title to lands in modern Germany. Thus the Fugger Family, had a Grafschaft in their name. There is a beautifull AV 10 Dukaten gold coin in Smithsonian display, to die for.:( Thats that sad part of being a coin collector, you can never obtain the dreamy coins. Always comes down to "empty pockets" :meh: 1599c69e553c30c445b8e24b1b16c073 (5).jpg

    Kingdom of Hungary
    Ferdinand I 1526-64
    AV Goldgulden 1564
    Kremnitz Mint

After King Lajos II and most of his nobles were slain at the Battle of Mohacs 1526, the Ottomans partitioned Hungary, Transylvania would be a vassal Principality subserviant to Sultan Sulieman I. The Western portion, Kingdom of Hungary elected Ferdinand as King, however Janos I Zapolya was favored by the Ottomans. Ferdinand I needed oney for his wars and intrigues, so guess who he called on? I find it annoying most European history books don't even mention Fugger's name. He's one of the most influential figures in European history!

And the Holy Roman Emperor even granted the Family their own Countship to rule.
Jakob Fugger was more powerfull then HRE Maximilian I, the Emperor had to get the Archbishop of Köln (Cologne) to have a meeting with Herr Fugger. The reason, Friedrich III (Maximilians Dad) arranged a marriage with Maria van Burgundy was $$$$$. She became Duchess of Burgundy after her brother Charles the Bold was killed in the Battle of Nancy vs the Swiss and Duke of Lorraine in 1477. But even marrying a rich Duchess was not enough, since the Family was poor. So Fugger held the "goldgulden" and with that had a lo of power.
