If I want to make a set of coins accessible online for others to look at the ONLY method I currently know of is creating an NGC Registry Custom Set. I don't know if PCGS has the same capability. I need to make a Custom Set for two reasons: -- NGC doesn't have a regular Registry Set for specialty sets -- and it wouldn't matter if they did since my coins are in both NGC and PCGS slabs. Are there other options?
1. Go to collectivecoin.com and set up an account. You can designate a set there. It is in the process of being acquired by Stacks (vs shutting down) so changes could be afoot. But, it's a very nice site and you can make a collection there. It's really quite awesome, but there is always the fact you are at the mercy of the site owner. 2. If you are feeling a bit adventurous you can make your own website. Weebly, Wix, SmugMug, Squarespace are the ones I looked into the most and/or have seen others using. Drag/drop etc make it so a complete newbie like me could build a site. I think they all have a free version so you can play around a bit first. I went with Weebly. I also have a couple custom sets at NGC. The look is dated but it's functional. Don't know about PCGS.
If you're just looking to post pictures and a description, starting a CoinTalk thread with your set could be an option. It can even become a featured thread and sit on the front page.
I have never looked closely at Wordpress, but don't they have permanent blogs which will accommodate images? Much cheaper than any domain/website you can create.
I was considering creating my own website. I was going to use something like Dreamweaver until I found out that you can't buy the software. You have to lease it. If I were going to do development full time, maybe. But doing that off and on when I find the time (and inclination) would not be cost effective. I'll look into your suggestions.
Even for something as small as my current CBQ varieties there would have to be 34 coins shown. I think that would be a bit much for a CT thread.
I have a subscription to iPage. That's where I host my images. IF I could develop my own website that's where I'd host it. I have enough knowledge of HTML that I could probably cobble together a website but it would be rather primitive. I'll probably first go to the NGC Registry, set up something there, then look at some of the other suggestions.
@kanga, I assume you've looked at the "Showcase" and "Gallery" here on CT? Might not meet your needs, but hey, it's free...?
Just to give you an idea of the image size I'm considering here's the obverse of one of the coins from the first set I'm going to post. Comments on size and anything else, please. I'll dress it up a bit but there's nothing I can do about the slab "fingers".
WordPress says they have a LOT of templates that help you create a real website that meets their specifications, but that also ties you to WP more or less permanently. I never had any desire to build a website, so I don't know much about details; I like to keep a low profile. You know the motto chiseled over the door at the CIA -- "When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail..."
Are you specializing in Overton varieties? I sold all mine at Stack's in 2012, then I even eBayed the book. Downsizing! edit// Are those tiny white flecks paper dust? The image needs mid-range adjustments in contrast, and the white flecks (I get them too), if inside, will eventually damage your coins.
Absolutely, this is free - http://www.wobook.com/ And this is an example of what you can do with it - http://www.wobook.com/WB1N5fN8yR3B/Collection-1/The-Crown-Collection-World-Gold.html In other words, you can make it any way you wanna make it
Nope, not Overton. Since they are quarters, not halves, I use Browning numbers. As for the flecks I'll have to dig the slab out and make that determination. And as for adjustments I want the coin to look as close to its in-hand appearance as possible. I've got Photoshop but I avoid tinkering with my images. If it doesn't look right I'll re-image before trying other options.
Definitely not! I've spent extra money shipping them back to the appropriate TPG in order to get the variety attribution on the label. I've learned to live with the "fingers".
I created this website, www.freewebs.com/milwaukeejaybirds, for our camping club. Completely free, using their software, a few ads to keep it free. My 2 cents.
You could ask Bob Campbell @robec what he uses for his galleries. He photographed the images for my ANA Medals collection and placed them in a Miscellaneous Gallery on his site. http://www.robecsimages.com/chris.html Chris
I use collectivecoin.com as well. My capped bust quarters are on there: https://collectivecoin.com/Jaelus/foq4od1qpp9t1D0Dr9Sn
