"...The artifact, sometimes called the "Maine Penny," is now in the Maine State Museum. Its discovery has raised a number of questions — mainly, how did it get there, and does its presence in Maine mean the Viking reached the Pine Tree State?..." https://www.livescience.com/archaeology/vikings/did-the-vikings-reach-maine
Oh! As a New Englander, I find this fascinating. So? There is a chance for me as a Metal Detectorist finding ancient coinage.
When I was a brand-new collector in the late 1970s, Coins magazine had an article about this piece. It really fired up my young imagination.
Did you ever hear of Western/Eastern treasure magazine (metal detecting)? It shut down but had some good articles back in the day also.
I used to subscribe. Loved it. One of my local dig buddies/mentors was featured in the Ten Best Finds one year, back in the mid-'90s.
I should pop into that Museum and check out that coin the next time I'm in Augusta visiting my older son. I don't think I've been inside that museum since I was in Middle School, LOL.
I love reading about stuff like this (long time subscriber to Archaeology magazine). I agree with the article that trade probably resulted in it ending up in Maine, but who knows. The Vikings could have gotten that far down the coast without really leaving any evidence of it.
