OK we are finally at the end. 4 posts. Season 1 2016 I started in June, but I was going almost every day and it took a while before I figured out WTH I was doing even though I did it in the mid 90's in Colorado. 5 halves somehow I pulled 2 golds 18 dollar coins and 18 silvers. The first photo was the first silver I pulled in NM, so that was exciting. This is Disney Sterling (Aristocats) almost 1/2 ounce. My first half in NM. And then the next day I got a half and a dol coin. First ring in NM. OK this was interesting. I had this ring in my junkers pile. I was mailing a bunch of the nicer looking costume jewelry to a friend, and when I pulled this out, I could see that it was made REALLY well. The stone is (amethyst?) it changes color, sometimes it looks purple and other times green which doesn't seem possible. While it doesn't look like it in the photo, I was able to find a very faint 925 so we had it tested and it came back real. They don't do gold there but they thought the bezel might be but I checked it with my loupe and I am confidant it is not. I went through my jar of junkers and found one other small bent crappy looking ring that was also .925.
Season 1 2016 part 2/4. This photo is not great, it is the giant chain in the 2nd photo in the center. Almost 2 ounces. I didn't test it, it is stamped .925, and I checked the seller online, Piercing Pagoda, and the net says it should be real. This was stamped 14K. But it was really dirty and I just wasn't able to clean it at all. I took it to my gold guy who said it was fake, some brass and copper, but it cleaned it with nitric oxide and it looks great. He cleaned one other piece I have a bracelet stamped 14K but it's brass, but after he cleaned it with the nitric acid, it looks great. Here are the 2 fake 14K Italy stamps and then the bracelet. Now this was very exciting, besides the 2 dol coins, my first gold ever. I wasn't sure because of the color but my gold guy tested it and offered me cash immediately. I didn't sell. I thought perhaps it was mixed with titanium, but he said it was probably just some pot metal. It pays to go early.
Was this at park? Everything is so clean. All I usually find is old and dirt cans and bottlecaps. Oh, and a skeleton key.
Season 1 2016 part 3/4. Found nothing at one big site except this silver ear cuff. The cross isn't stamped, it's a homemade job but it's silver. These 2 chains are silver and one of the charms.
Season 1 2016 part 4/4. A gold and a silver. The gold was at the same location as the 1st gold. When I found this broken watch I thought it was junk and almost threw it away. When I got home and looked with my loupe, Seiko Japan the back and the band are silver. 1 troy ounce. 2 dollar coins as well. Not the same site. I must have skipped this one. 925 RL China. Ralph Lauren, plated gold and prob sold as gold in China but it's silver and heavy. Thanks for bearing with me.
Sal, the big silver chain was at a park in Santa Fe. Still in the wood chips underneath some exercise equipment. It wasn't buried in the dirt. I went out for the first hunt of 2026 Season 11, and it was disappointing. Things slow down in the winter but I expected a little better. I have a box of knives in the garage. Too bad I can't spend the 2 pound coin.
Here is one of the NIFCs that I did not include a close up. I really like this one a lot. 2003-P Sac. It seemed to be in better condition when I found it. Maybe it toned with the other coins in the tube? Gonna try acetone to see if the obverse goo comes off.
Reminds me that I need to fire my metal detector up while the ground is soft from moisture (rain). I've not gotten it out in about 4-5 months now.
I like it when the ground is wet, as the metal gives off a halo affect in the wet ground, and targets can seem larger and easier to hit the coil. Although then, it is not pin point and takes more digging to find it.
Hey guys! What detector are you running? My wife bought me this for me and I absolutely love it except I'm having trouble with where to exactly dig the hole. It's different than my White's XLT. Nokta Simplex Ultra.... Here is a ring I found a few years back. Haven't found much for jewelry except for that old copper adjustable type.
willieboyd2 If you are talking about the class ring, then maybe you should read the post when I found it. I went to the school, but the pandemic was in full swing and visitors were not allowed. I checked online for all kinds of alums and reunions. The ring was from the first graduating class. I kept going back to the park and there was no lost ring sign. If I am reading through the lines of your post correctly, I don't like it at all.
Gold update. I wanted to get the last find in, the bottom chain. I didn't test the one above it which is stamped 10K so it may or may not be good. But I am very confidant the new bottom one is good.
I was going through a box of stuff, non precious metals. This piece is very interesting, these are some LDS buildings. So there's no stamp and I just figured it was fake gold. There is a copyright and next to that it says IRI. Well I found THE EXACT piece online and it could be 12K gold filled. Well generally gold filled is nothing, it's like plating. BUT, it is a much heavier plating than reg gold plate and at the current ridic prices for gold, there would be $20 of gold in this piece if it is 12K gold filled.
Nice modern finds! We mostly have newer finds, and the old stuff is few and far between unless it's virgin ground. Just waiting for Spring.....
I only hit a few spots and the ground is frozen, but I still pulled up a dollar coin, a silver medallion and some other swag. I was going to go tom AM but now IDK because the ground takes a while to thaw.
Sunday was a go. First silver of the year and a dollar coin so a good hunt in the frigid tundra of 2026. The first site I pop the dollar coin. There were several targets at a few sites I just couldn’t dig because the ground was frozen. I get to the second site, I open the car door and there are more surface finds than what I found in the park. The next site was one of my old sites that had been closed for for renovation, and the finds were OK. I find the silver medallion at the next site (I found another exactly like it). The next spot I had to skip last time because of a homeless encampment, it was OK and another surface find. (In the park, but I didn’t need the detector.) I cut the Saturday hunt short, because I only had a few scroungy spots left and I will just do them in warmer weather. Sunday still cold in the AM but a little warmer than Sat. Sunday went well, the ground was not perma frosted and there were a lot of targets. Happy with this hunt considering the first 2 of the year were brutal. The wheatie was fried so I cleaned it up to pull a date 1953-S.
Went out yesterday, unless you are on the north side of a building the ground is soft and thawed. 1.25 in quarters. 1.20 in dimes, a nickel. 20 cents Zinc, a hot wheels, and 15 coppers. 1 Wheat. That was about an hour, all in front of one house.
