    At spot? Sure!

At spot circa 1968? Not so much.

If they are circulated you can just spend them.
As a B and M will give you like 1.25 each.
They need to be crisp, high grade, and or old, and or stars.
I have 21 $5 silver certs that I would like to move.

For the life of me, I just don't understand why EVERY silver certificate was not redeemed when the government offered the opportunity. When was that? 1964? I don't remember, hadn't even hit puberty yet.

I believe by 1968 you had to redeem them at the Treasury in DC and only got little baggies with a dollar's worth of silver granules. The Treasury stopped paying out silver dollars ca. 1964. While many here on the board would have done so but the general public more or less could give a rats behind.

Thanks for the info. My dad sure would have. I think he might have been one of the first bank coin roll hunters.:D He detested clad coins and even when I was a kid, he said these 90% silver coins were going to be worth big money some day. He didn't live to see it come to fruition but his children sure did. He never was a collector but he was a 5 star general stacker.

In my family it was my grandfather(b 1891) that was the hoarder of silver in the mid to late 1960s. Unfortunately his stash was deposited in the bank in 1976 by my aunt who didn't know any better. He was not really a collector but he did help me with my collection - silver dollars, 2 cent piece he got from his brother in 1897 and an old half dime. My grandfather lived a very long life and had some good money stories.

They used to give you a silver dollar.
You could redeem them up until June 24, 1968.
This is what the net says (not AI): In March 1964, Secretary of the Treasury C. Douglas Dillon halted redemption of silver certificates for silver dollar coins; during the following four years, silver certificates were redeemable in uncoined silver "granules". All redemption in silver ceased on June 24, 1968.
Ah I see you couldn't get Peace dollars for them anymore. I would just change them for 2 half dollars or 4 quarters since silver was still circulating. I think it was common knowledge that they were going to stop making coins out of silver and I think the spot price then was barely above face.

That's a great (and sad) story about your grandfather's stash lost to your aunt's lack of understanding. My dad didn't trust banks with their lockboxes. He built a custom home in the mid 90's and had the contractor build a false wall in one of the walk in closets with a removable piece of sheet rock. I remember my youngest brother (who was a body builder) telling me about the day he had to help move bullion from the bank to the home vault. He said it about whipped his azz. :D

Unfortunate for you and your family, but the kind of thing roll-hunters live for...
