I am as sure as my name is Paddy! There are thousands of counterstamp coins out there. All done deliberately after it left the Mint.
Thousands?? I know of one person alone who has put almost a quarter of a million counterstamped coins into circulation. But I suppose that counts as "thousands".
I have a 1990 penny with a big letter J stamped above the date, the penny is like new, is it possible a church stamped it?

We would never know unless you actually saw the person who did it. Why would you think a church did the counterstamp?
