An 1892 Ten dollar I bought in the mid-nineties from a reputable dealer at the PAN show. A raw extra-fine (maybe low au).

I don’t remember the date of my first gold coin because I bought 4 gold coins the first time. All four were $2.50 Gold Indian coins. I slowly bought more and now I own the entire set of them. I bought the 1911-D, strong D first and after I completed the set I bought the 1911-D, weak D. For this set I really wanted to own the variety.

 

It was a tiny coin replica, about as big around as a pencil eraser. I gave it away in a contest

My first gold coin was an 1854 Type II gold dollar. I bought it from my mother’s cleaning lady. Type II gold dollars had begun to become a big deal when I bought it in circa 1963, but this one was not worth a fortune. It has a VF-25 or so, and date was very weak, but readable. A weak date is not unusual for a Type II gold dollar. I sold it a little over ten years later.

The same lady had an 1853-D gold dollar. It was the first gold coin I ever saw. She would not sell that one. One of the men in town had offered her $50 for it, and she had passed. That was a fair offer in the early 1960s. It was probably an EF, but I had only been a collector for a few months when I saw it as a fifth grader and had no ideal how to grade coins.

 

When I started collecting Roman coins, back in 1974, I was poor and could not afford one. Now that I am better off, prices of Roman gold coins have gone up so much that I still can't afford one: this is called destiny.....

 

Yes, if I had my way, twelve Caesars would all be aureii. That is beyond my budget. The only aureus I have is a one from Antonius Pius which is the most common of all. I do have a couple of solidii which much more common and cheaper.

My first was actually three gold coins, part of a large eBay lot. I thought I was making out like a bandit, but eventually learned enough to realize that I'd overpaid by a little bit for the lot as a whole. But given the swings in gold and silver, I'm still well ahead in the end.

I eventually sent them to ANACS, and posted them in this GTG thread, which was its own entertainment.

 

This was a gift from my late father in 1995.

 

My first gold coin was a Mexican one Peso from my grandmother. I still have it.

 

My first gold coin was a 1945 Mexican Dos Pesos, I paid $52 for it, after that I ventured out to start buying 1/10th American Gold Eagles at around $160 each, those days were really good to me, anyone remember prices like that??

 

Back in graduate school (late 60's early 70's) I started dealing with First CoinVestors where I bought what I could afford. Several times, they included a free 2 peso gold coin. I ended up with 5 of them.
