for 5.50 i took a shot at this ugly impaired proof..... is it? thought it would be easy, i'm leaning yes but i would not bet on it. coin looks to have had a layer of tarnish that was removed to this state. the mirror like field seems to be there but its still too covered to know for sure.
Let me say, as an error coin it would be a, Strick Thru Grease, and a Woody in my opinion. I like it thanks for sharing.
In my quickness to your post, I made a slight error. That would be, Struck Thru Grease not Strick, sorry.
It is not an error coin. It is not a proof, impaired or otherwise. It has suffered from environmental damage and subsequent improper cleaning which is making it appear like a woody, but it is not.
I think the sharpness of the lettering and devices is comparable to my proof. Also shown in post #19863. The surface is more matte than mirror-like, as shown in the animation. For $5.50, I would try swishing the coin in clean acetone a few times. If it seems to be helping, you can also use a saturated cotton Q-tip to very gently massage any stubborn areas. There’s a video on YouTube somewhere where the presenter shows his technique. He tugs at the cotton a little bit to get it good and loose, and only uses the loose fibers to brush the dirt away. I like the keep the swab and the coin submerged in acetone at all times. And change Q-Tips and acetone frequently, lest you drag some grit across the surface.
yes damaged, but that does not make it not a proof strike. the coin edge tells me it could be but the edge at the top looks warn. the mirror like field kind of shows through. i do not know cents almost at all. if you have other indicators that it is not a proof strike please post.
Not sure about it being a proof but if I had to say I’d say I don’t think so. It looks to be a woody but the toning and a cleaning may have given it that look. Photos just are good enough to make that determination on this coin.
I am basing my guess from the lettering. Compare the IN GOD WE TRUST and the date to this business strike. They are fatter on the business strike and thinner on the proofs. While not shiny, the surfaces are seem flatter on the proofs and more granular on the business strike.
