Since I see a thread on scores today. I've had one of these on my list for some time now. It wasn't my target in this auction but it was my second choice. Either way I can mark this addition off the want list. D. Silanus AR Denarius 91 BC 12h, Rome Helmeted head of Roma right, A to left. Victory driving golloping biga right, XII above. I've had a thing for biga's, quad is still on my want list. This one didn't put up much a fight. I actually paid more for it than I probably would've for my target, but I see them often at around the same price I would've paid for it.
nice lookin' toning smojo! i still don't have a republican roma denarius...how embarrassing! on my list as well.
It's my first, and last for a little while (maybe). Have to zero my tab out this payday. That's some nice toning @iamtiberius
Nice coin @Smojo . I definitely don't have that one, but I do have one of his ancestors, M. Junius Silanus from 56 years earlier.
Here's my D Silanus as to go with your denarius @Smojo D. Junius L.F. Silanus, As minted in Rome, 91 BC No legend, Head of Janus D SILANVS L F, Prow of galley right 12.08 gr Ref : RCV # 738 The following comment from : http://www.forumancientcoins.com/historia/historia.htm "Decimus Junius Silanus was the son of M. Junius Silanus, who commanded the army that was defeated by the Germanic Cimbri in Transalpine Gaul. Decimus was the stepfather of Marcus Brutus, the murderer of Caesar, having married his mother Servilia. He was elected consul in 63 for the following year ; and in consequence of his being consul designatus, he was first asked for his opinion by Cicero in the debate in the senate on the punishment of the Catilinarian conspirators. He was consul 62, with L. Licinius Morena, along with whom he proposed the Lex Licinia Julia". Q
I've looked at a few examples like yours but have yet to add one, yet. Like the prow reverse and haven't added an example from any denomination. I will eventually. I think I'm going to attempt to settle my biga appetite and get a quad next. Then at leisure add on to them. I can't believe I'm thinking about starting another (sub) collection.
Came in the mail earlier this week. My pics aren't the best and its toned some which seems to add to the difficulty. Next up will hopefully be a quad. But heres my D. Silanus
