I agree about the commems. What puzzles me even more is when the first spouse gold goes for a discount even though those are .999 and fractional (1/2 oz). As far as the silver, I think you will see better offers. I did not try this but I have seen junk silver go for more than silver still in the proof set. So it sometimes makes sense to break it out of the mint plastic and just bring it in a tube. I believe the dealers go off of proof set bid (with a discount) rather than silver melt. Again it does not make sense to me but for some reason that happens.
Yeah, proof sets take up more space (as you've observed) than five generic 90% quarters in a tube. From the dealers' POV, I imagine a silver quarter proof set is five 90% quarters that require extra labor (cracking out) to maximize their liquidity.
I sell off junk silver only when it gets so heavy that it makes the bottom of my dresser drawer fall out….. Yes that did happen and my wife likes to remind me… Regularly…
I have noticed there is a allot of bent, mangled, defaced coins for sale since the market has gone up. I guess people getting rid of them with the silver prices. I have purchased some silver at spot but buying spot or below I dont know if I will ever recoup much profit, I wondered that when I was buying ASE at 19 -24 per coin too. 40 looks doable before ST. Nick 4 SURE.
Blackberry is a good example of ignoring your market because you think you are dominating it and everyone wants your product (many others before and after them have followed the same fate with different products/services). Apple's interface won people over, after the gov't certified the Apple iPhone then it started outselling the BB. Then BB was like .. oh, we need a graphical user interface but lacked the leadership. they also tried to develop everything in house even long after google offered their Android OS. Of course BB now is totally out of the phone market and only sells cyber security services. . I never had a BB, but did have an android with the BB keyboard layout. . On another note. I might start buying Silver again .. as I can't afford gold anymore .. at least I don't want to afford gold anymore. . I don't like selling any bullion. I'm hold long and forever whether ASE, AGE, or APE. I sold some ASE about 5 years ago .. wish I kept that. Still have my original tube of ASE from 1998 when I first started collecting them.
Welcome to CoinTalk! I like the way you think. Not too many folks here who aren’t in agreement. Larry
