Now that I have a current (2016) Silver Eagle, it's time to add the first year to my (very tiny) collection. I'm looking for uncirculated, brand new, no damage (spots, etc). I've looked on the APMEX, JM Bullion, and MCM websites, where the prices seem to be around $50 each for BU SAE's. I know they carry a collector's premium in price, and I understand that. I was happy to hear my local coin dealer's price. He quoted me $35 last weekend for a 1986 BU SAE. Which sounds much better to my wallet.... So I guess my big question for the CoinTalk Knowledge Base here is: Does anyone know of a place to get these for less than $35? Thanks.
Last time I looked (which is almost a year) $35 for a BU SAE or proof is about right. I recall seeing some around $25 range. At one time there were several on ebay. Try Sirius Coins. I've had good luck with them in the past. If I think of more I'll post them for you.
Yes, sorry. I meant the American Silver Eagle Bullion Coin. Ungraded. Unslabbed. BU condition. Not a Proof. Is that the Sirius Auction site that sells coins?
It's been a little while. They (atleast they used to) have a site one link for sales another for coin auctions yet another for sport cards. When I was actively collecting moderns I bought quite a bit from both sides of their coin operation. I've put my moderns on the back burner for quite sometime now to persue ancient coins. I still search/buy moderns but very moderately mostly keys & missing types.
I completed my ase collection using my local coin store, gave him a list of the dates I needed and bought a few here and there. Id personnally do that. Since I'm now a usual customer there he gives me free coin folders, 1/10th silver bullion, steel penny. He even calls me up and I get first dibs when someone cashes in the relatives coin collection.
You could always save up and buy the entire set for $900, in a Dansco album, and average just about $30 per coin, if you plan to build a complete set. Price may even be less, as silver is dropping.
Thanks for the input everyone. I ended up going back to my coin dealer today. His price was $5 less than what he quoted me last weekend. I guess $30 for a 1986 ASE isn't bad. As of right now, I'm not sure if I'll be trying to collect one from each year. I bought a current one, and now I have the first year. I think I'm content for now.... Until a great deal on another one comes around.
