At a recent gathering, a friend of mine dropped a large match box with 11 Morgan and Peace dollars on me. They are in hideous condition, due primarily to petrified gunk and his attempt to use silver polish on them. They look like they were recovered from an atomic blast zone. All common dates. Of course, he wants to know what to do with them. I don't deal in junk silver so I'm asking those who do for a ballpark estimate of what he might get for them if offered as junk silver. Thanks!
ost: 2559249, mer: 73711"]sell them on the bay, t them at 15x fv...no res.[/QUOTE] Ebay fees, Paypal fees, shipping fees, they will eat your profit margin down to nothing! Plus if the buyer doesn't like the coin inhand then you have to go through all the bullcrap of a return and refund and then waiting to get you fees refunded to you! But if you got them for free -
Offer them as culled Dollars on the BST here. Any buyer on here will know what to expect and wont give grief like an eBay buyer could.
I think the BST here is a good option. Another good option is to join a local Facebook Yard Sale group (they are usually organized by county and/or city/town) - or one of the many Facebook coin BST groups. This would be a good local cash-only type transaction, no fees, no shipping. If you choose the FB route, remember to allow "strangers" to send you friend requests/messages, because many of the group admins will only let you join their kingdom if you accept their friend request.
Cull Morgans still go for above melt. If you can see dates and not trashed they'd go for $20.00 each where I live.
Even in such trashed conditions they're still very liquid. You certainly could take any of the suggested online routes, but also just as easily sell in person (not necessarily to a dealer though) especially if they're usually taxable in your area. Contrary to the paranoia often displayed here, it's usually rather quick and painless as long as one uses a little common sense. If people are generally still willing to pay the common "dollar premium" (over melt) for coins in such trashed shape I do not know, but figure melt as a baseline and go from there. All depends on what you or your friend are willing to do to maximize the return. Since there's only 11 of them, going out of your way may be more trouble than it's worth, but is for you to decide.
You can try eBay, or do a WTS here and try to sell them for a bit over melt. You can also try Craigslist or call around to coin shops. Some around my neck of the woods offered way more for a bunch of coins than I would have so it never hurts to ask.
Hang on to them until after the election. It is going to be a nightmare no matter who wins and that lil bit of silver....you never know. I am glad I have some ounces tucked away. Along with guns, ammo, food, water, and fuel. And the TOILET Paper.....still sealed in original packaging.
It's on sale here, and I've laid in probably a hundred rolls -- and I still don't think it'll be enough to cope with the campaign rhetoric we'll be catching over the next five days.
and certainly not enough for the at least 3 months after the vote as everything is going to be......poop hits the fan. I am sure that through it all though the members of coin talk will still be united through what were here for, COINS.
I heard silver and gold coins and bullion are a little rough on the backside, but FRNs if crumbled really well work wonders. Oh no, here come the Keynesians!!! Ahhhhh.......
Keep them... any morgan and peace dollar in the meanest condition is worth all of the gold in the world.
I'd eBay them, but take a personal check, money order, or other non-PayPal form of payment... yes, it will take longer, but it will save them some headaches.
Given the horrendous condition of the coins, I'd just keep things simple by bringing them to the nearest coin or pawn dealer around and trying to get as close to melt as possible. Then the dealer could put the coins out of their misery by refining them into bullion.
It would be crazy to sell to a dealer at melt, most people will at least pay a bit of a premium over melt. If you got 1.50 over melt after shipping that's about an extra $15. Doesn't sound like much but considering it's about $200 that's 10% more
