Scored this for under 6 bucks! Was listed as 1916p Walking Liberty. The sellers pics were even worse than mine, bUT on the last blurry pic, I was certain I saw a mm on the obverse. I was right, it's an s. This will fill a hole in my book, a 1916s for under melt value!

Would grade in around a FILLER-2... that said, it's still about a $25 coin. Congrats!

Looks like coins are not the sellers main gig. Assorted antiques with a few coins mixed in. I'm thinking he checked some other Walkers, found mm on the reverse, and assumed all Walkers had mm on the reverse. Thus, no mm, it must be Philly. I only need a 1916p, 1921p, and 1921s to complete the set!

Some people on eBay and other sites have no idea what they're doing. Sometimes I'll see circulated coins listed as BU or Uncirculated...

Cool on being 3 short of complete on the Walkers. They were one of the first sets I completed. Good luck tracking down the other 3 cheaply.

Other than a lucky score, I was thinking of buying the 21's slabbed (for authenticity ) and cracking them. Any AG to G is just fine with me.

What's even cooler is these folders were started by my wife's grandfather, probably over 50 years ago. They were passed to us, and Whitman book number 2 was short by about 10 coins, book 1 needed a few more than that. I can't wait for an over 50 year endeavor to be completed!

Or just go to any reputable coin dealer. I hate throwing away on slabs that I'd be cracking later.

That's a very neat story! Finishing what he started!

I've also finished his Roosevelt dime Whitman, and started on his Franklin Half Whitman.

Nice find! 95% of the time it would've turned out to be a 1916-D, actually more common than the P. I did a couple of "bad-picture gambles" hoping to land an S, but never got anything but the D. I finally just bought one that was explicitly listed as S.

I just recently completed a Walker set as well. VG to Fine up to 1934 and then XF to AU from 1934 on. I inherited my dad's set nearly complete. However, he had cleaned them all so I've basically replaced everything.

The price structure on this year is very weird...

    Date Mintage RB Price (G-4/EF-40)
    1916 608,000 $50/$225
    1916D 1,014,400 $50/$215
    1916S 508,000 $120/$650

You would think the price of the Philly would be closer to the S, given the similar mintages, but instead, it's about the same price as the more common D mint in all grades.

Nice find, I am still working on my collection, 1939-1947 now getting all the mints, I have a couple older ones, but price keeps me in those date ranges for now. Trying to at least get VF on the 39-47.

Nice find! I would say $20-$25 in that condition. I don't think it would make Poor-1.

I have a couple of coins which are far worse than that one, believe me, Omegaraptor. I don't know if either the 1887 V nickel or 1947-S dime which I recently found CRH would make the grade Poor-1.
