They just made a few for collectors....the Mints focused on striking coins more widely used in commerce like smaller denomination silver coins.

Use of gold coins in commerce was mostly limited to settling trade balances and less so for the domestic American economy.

Do we have any dealers here who can comment on the influence of the influx of the FAIRMONT COLLECTION on Double Eagle pricing as of mid-2022 ?

That’s an interesting question. May I suggest it’s worth a new thread instead of a tag on this one?

Good idea, especially since most of the Double Eagles and other gold coins in that collection/hoard are NOT bullion types.

Premiums Are Strong: I had to sell one of my quasi-bullion coins, my 1915-S MS-63 OGH. I bought it at FUN 2020 for the official spot gold price, excluding the fact that it's a shade under 1 ounce (0.9675 oz.).

I was pleasantly surprised a week or so ago when my LCS looked up the price online (whatever he uses) and came back with $2,300 and a comment that "yeah, premiums are strong."

No argument from me, thank you very much, off to pay some bills.....:D

Many expect common date gold DE very possibly to fall some. With their large pops many set up in bourse room at recent show feeling they slightly overpriced. However other factors off the economic scene could push them up. Low pop scarce material should hold steady / possibly increase. I offered 5 pct behind bid on a few common date slabbed Saints brought to my table - the guy walked off in a huff then came back so bought a couple common date flashy Saints in PCGS 63 and 64 from him as wanted add some to my gold stock. A Mexico 1943 50 silver centavos PCGS 64 sold for $75. A 1943 in NGC 66 brought $135. Nice low pop coins. I picked up a 1937-D flashy PCGS66 CAC Oregon for $300 from a walkup seller after some negotiation. I then flipped it to an investor later in the show for $379. Then I enjoyed the free coin show food for dealers - slices of Pizza.

The good things about Saints and Double eagles is you already have almost an once of GOLD so you have that to start with, and then you have your premiums based
on year and population, I like buying A/U 53 - 58 if available with a boost from CAC
a great value for the money :)

I think that so many gold collectors really don't know about Saints (or Libertys), just modern bullion or gold stocks/ETFs. I think you will see more demand going forward for gold in general and Saints in particular.

I do believe there is an upper limit to premiums on common Saints where the populations are large enough to satiate collector demand (~30,000) and start easing into the investor class. I wouldn't expect even the 1915-S I had with an OGH to sell for 30-40% premium to spot unless the gold market is going nuts.

I do like slabbed $20 DE AU-MS64. Anything can buy close to or not real far from melt. Just pick out nice PCGS / NGC pieces.

That's basically what I did at FUN 2020....someone wanted to sell the coin cheap, I got it more or less for spot.

63 grade...OGH...and in a holder. Not a bad deal for an extra $50 or whatever I paid given I got slightly less than 1 ounce.

I have seen allot of the fairmont collection showing up at APMEX and on e-bay
but the coins dont seem that special to have a pedigree attached, this is mostly resaved for the higher end collections with rare coins, I really dont see that here
at least the ones I have reviewed anyway.
