I was given this coin and can't find out anything about it other than it looks like a gold Rose Guinea. Any thoughts on it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I can see where it had traces of some kind of plating on it. The lettering and devices are a bit quirky. It’s certainly not a Rose Guinea or pattern thereof, but you’ve already guessed that. I vote fake- but an old fake- perhaps a 19th century gaming counter. It might still have some modest value along those lines, if that’s what it is.
PS- I fixed your images so they’d show full size instead of thumbnailed. That’s a setting you can choose yourself when posting.
Another possibility is that it is a contemporary counterfeit (once plated) that was intended to pass in commerce. Again, if that’s the case, it will still have some collectibility and at least modest value in its own right. It’s fake, but not worthless like a modern fake would be, I reckon.
Yeah, @lordmarcovan got it. It looks like an old counterfeit or as he said, FAKE. I did find a real one on a google search to compare it to if you want. Great Britain Guinea KM 604 Prices & Values | NGC (ngccoin.com)
I'd lean toward gaming token rather than counterfeit. For comparison, here's a copper token meant to look like a 1789 Guinea. Because of the metal, I don't think it was ever meant to fool anyone. Not sure the actual date of this token, but from the corrosion it's not modern!
