I consistently buy the proof & Un-circulated silver eagles from the mint. I have never bought the bullion coins priced around $ 18.00. How do these coins compare to the un-circulated coins from the mint ? Do the bullion coins have a mint mark ? I see the 2016 bullion MS70 coins going for around $ 40.00. This looks to be the same value as the mint un-circulated MS 70's. I am somewhat confused between bullion coins and mint un-circulated.

The bullion coins are minted at West Point (sometime San Fran) and lack a mint mark. The quality (I've found) is stellar when purchased in the plastic mint rolls. They're every bit as nice as the collectable coins that have a mint mark.

It has been 8 years since I purchased any of the UNC's from the Mint, but the 2006W-2008W had the burnished finish. The "regular" UNC's had no mintmark, and these were the ones in the Green Monster boxes which the Mint sold only to specific dealers. Maybe this has changed in more recent years.

Ok you guys, nice answers. But I think what I really want to know is if there is a difference between the regular bullion coins and the US Mint un-circulated coins.

Hey Ken, almost didn't recognize you with that sack over your head. What happened to the P-38 ?

The regular bullion coins are sold only to qualified dealers in the Green Monster boxes. These bear no mintmark. The Mint only sells the UNC burnished SAE's with the West Point mintmark.

Hi Chris, I think ALL un-circulated silver eagles from the mint are either a "W" or an "S" mm. This i suppose is the distinction between un-cirulated and bullion coins. Right or wrong ?

So, why would bullion coins have the same value as an un-cirulated "W".

I'm not sure about any bearing the "S" mintmark. Maybe someone else knows.

I also wanted to add that "qualified dealers" who were eligible to buy the Green Monster boxes had to show proof that they could sell 1 million ounces per year. I don't know if this still a requirement or not.

The only people who can answer that are those who buy them.

Well, I have the option of buying a "W" un-circulated raw coin from the mint or a bullion MS70 for about the same price. Which would be advisable ?

    The only 'S' was in the 2011 anniversary set.........otherwise, they're 'S' less s's......

I've always wondered why, with the S mint mark being so coveted by collectors, the mint would make these in SF and not put the S on them. What am I missing here?
