Yep, this would be the best strategy. Buy one already graded if you're after a grade. They are out there.

Nice coin the new pictures show the luster which is why I suggested conservation the first pics were a little cloudy. I understand why you want it graded. i have a coin from my grand father that is a dog of a coin but its from my grandpa and I've thought of grading it.

If you and and your daughter have sentimental attachment to the coin than graded it or find some one that is making a submission and send it in with them. If you just want to get her a coin like the 89 panda several option for ms 69's already graded for just over $100.

With that said I could see it going 68 I'd have to see it in hand or have better pics to say its a 69.

They originally came in them iirc, and apparently he still has it, which is a good thing. However, I'd be very careful about removing it (to weigh or for whatever reason); a small slip/mistake is all it would take to kill whatever chance it may presently have of grading in his hoped-for range.

As it stands, I simply cannot see it well enough to form an opinion, or at least one I'd have much confidence in sharing. JWT has done a rather fine job of explaining the basics, but it is worth remembering that as a new collector, submitting any coin isn't for the faint of heart. Unless you wish it to be slabbed regardless or grade or cost, I'd just leave it in the present holder. If at a future date you wish to reconsider, the option is always available to you

NGC grading tier for this will be "Modern", which is $17 per coin for a minimum of 5 coins, and I think there is a one time fee of either $15 or $25 processing fee per batch of coins. Then you have the S&H to calculate as well. If it is only for this particular coin, it will be cheaper to just buy one off ebay already slabbed instead of you sending it to NGC.

I collect silver pandas, they are fun

I'm not looking for any certain grade on the panda. I just wanted to slab it really to hold on to it.

Ngc has a 5 coin minimum for their economy tier. Pcgs and anacs do not but sending only 1 coin in is expensive with shipping and fees

What have the premiums to spot bullion been for 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10th ounce Pandas, generally ?

I guess I should have clarified my response, I have bought the 1/2 silver panda, I do not have any of the gold pandas in fractionals other than a 1/10 oz 2009.
