Maybe there could be a "highlighted date" after X amount of time with a note that says "this is a very old thread and some or all of these guys are dead so if you are interested in this topic start a new thread".
This forum serves many roles: a social gathering place; a site to present original research; a site to share and critique new purchases; a reference and information guide; and a source for news such as hoard finds, future auctions, and coin shows. I, too, have been guilty of dredging up on an old thread while doing research or when paying a belated compliment. That said, I have also been reminded (at other sites) of things that I may have regretfully written almost a decade ago, reflecting a lack of either wisdom, maturity, or sobriety when I first unwisely posted them. A fair compromise is to lock threads without new activity for more than one year. We should, nevertheless, continue to promote open discussions and new research, while always remembering that what is written on the web may exist on this planet long after we do. So, let’s all have a happy, healthy, and successful 2016. guy
At what point do these posts get dated? Yesterday, Wednesday or Thursday at 3-00Pm doesn't mean much without full date? Just asking.
When I first joined Coin Talk, I looked at posts by subject, and responded to those I found of interest. It took me quite a while before I realized many of them were several years old. Call me unobservant or just plain stupid...but I'm not sure I want to apologize for doing this. These old threads made me comfortable with this group, finding the posts from others that shared a similar interest. I would not want to limit old threads, because I believe they encourage new members to get involved. If you must add a rule, I would be OK with a warning in red when a thread is old, with instructions or a link telling a newbie how to start a new thread. I know you say creating a new thread is easy, but I have never started one because you guys are experts and you intimidate me. Might I suggest you just don't read them if you are offended by old threads?
If you look at the posts that said 'yesterday' on Dec. 25 you will see they say 'Thursday' today and will say that tomorrow also. Next week that same thread will say Dec 24, 2015. If you need to see a thread demonstrating this, look at the one on Tom Cederlind which was started on Dec 17, 2015, which was until recently Thursday or Yesterday or Today as appropriate. The software used by Coin Talk has many good features. This is one of them. No one is proposing deleting old threads just to prevent adding posts to them when they are over a certain age. New people are encouraged to read old posts and start new posts on subjects that they find of interest. What we do not need is a post saying 'nice coin' on a thread from 2010. For that matter, I'd prefer no one post to a thread that they have not read in its entirety up to that point since many questions asked have been answered before a page back. Certainly we can ignore new posts to old threads and will be written off as unfriendly like some other venues or have to go back and see what was said several pages back so we can give a proper answer updated or repeated as appropriate.
I see no real reason to lock old threads down. If someone necropost's some then I don't think it will do to much harm, hell sometimes it may be necessary too "revise" incorrect info. Sometimes we forget about popular threads and someone digs them up and they go on for 10+ pages and are forgotten again and the cycle repeats itself. Ex- Steve's Favourite tune and coin thread. Now if someone is just trolling then the mods should step in and do what they do best. Just my two Siliquae
I find that "less rules" is usually better than "strict control" .... although a couple of my direct supervisors often disagree!! (*whatev* => I find that freedom breeds teamwork and creativity ..... oh, and good times!!) ... I kinda like seeing my old posts and/or old posts from dudes gone-by ... good "older" times
As a newer member with less than a year, I like to see the old threads revived and brought back to life with new posts. Many are packed with very good information. My vote is to keep them open.
