I haven't really delved into the Middle ages aside from a few cup coins. I thought, "why not?" for the sake of Gold. "I don't always buy gold, but when I do, I buy cheap Byzanite Solidi." Constans II and Constantine IV, AV Solidus Constantinople mint. Facing bust of Constans, with long beard on left, wearing plumed helmet. Facing bust Constantine, beardless, on right, crowned; each wearing chlamys; cross between their heads / VICTORIA AVGU and officina letter, cross potent on three steps between facing standing figures of Heraclius on left and Tiberius on right, both beardless, each wearing crown and chlamys and holding cross on globe; mintmark CONOB
Like you, I don't get into Byzantine and later coins, but this is a very nice looking gold piece I could see me buying. You said "cheap". I'm all about cheap.
i hear tell someone struck gold in this neck of the woods! yehhaaaaaaaaaaa! that's a wonderful coin IAT, super details...even those facing noses are in good shape. and four guys one one coin...that's cool.
When I see this coin's obverse, this is what comes to mind... it's just something about the perspective (knock knock knock) Honey, would you get that? (looks through peephole) Aw Christ. It's those guys from Monty Python again.
Wow, iamtiberius => that's a fantasic goldie you've got there!! (congrats) ... sadly, I don't have any gold byzantine coins ("cheap" is quite relative ... I often see these coins with $200-$300 dollar estimates, but once there is blood in the water, the hammer-price is often quite a bit higher than the estimate) ... I'm glad to hear that you got a good deal on it (it's always nice liking the coin and feeling like you scored a great deal) ... yah, it happend to me (once) ... anyway ... TIF => when I saw the blue-font, I thought that I'd already written a response to this thread!!? (*phew*)
Reshot Some gold. It's more difficult than I thought it would be. It's hard to get the right amount of light without too much glare. Before: After: 2nd photo shows an accurate color and appears to be less smooth; showing more of the imperfections/details.
I was wrestling with the same problem! I love the idea of CHEAP gold and like Bing said, "I am all about cheap."
