So I went to the coin shop today to buy an ounce of gold while it's still below $1200, and all he had was a 1986 half ounce eagle that he wanted $800 for because it's a rare date. I ended up buying a 10 oz. silver bar and all of the junk silver he had (about $20 FV), and then i went to a pawn shop and another coin store, and they didn't have any either. I even stopped by "We Buy Gold", and they wanted $1400 for an ounce. Has anyone else not been able to get gold lately?
Weird. I see gold everywhere at local coin shows. The dealer who usually had rare St Gaudens was out of them, but he had everything else in stock. Platinum is the metal I see being scarcer in supply, but this dealer also had 2015 APE in stock.
I usually get the name and number from dealers when I attend a local show. MOst of these guys are always getting inventory, and you can contact them outside of shows when you are in the market for something.
At the monthly Columbus show yesterday, LOTS of gold, virtually no silver. A few dealers apparently hard up for cash offered tempting deals on double eagles, but I didn't buy anything. Big crowd but sales didn't look very robust.
http://www.apmex.com/category/19803/gold-items-on-clearance Not a bad price at all , I think they take different kinds of payment . They've always sent me exactly what I ordered which are usually AGE , Canadian , Mexican gold or oz. bars .
Saw LOTS of gold at the show, prices high but I have never really bought any at a show. Got a 1999 Washington $5 in MS for $310 with tax so around $1250 and oZ
The devil's in the details. A $5 Washington contains 0.2418 Troy ounces. Shifting to the 1-ounce standard, it takes 4.14 coins to equal one ounce, and 4.14 x $310 equals $1,282.05 per ounce. Did you pay sales tax? If you did, and let's say 6%, you're now at $328.60 per coin, and 4.14 x $328.60 equals $1,360 per ounce. I post this not to criticize the OP, but to show newbies how to "zero in" on your true cost.
There have been lots of good deals on Ebay from legitimate sellers. If you don't have a credit card buy from Provident Metals or Apmex, you can send them a check. You can get a 1 oz off quality gold coin for $1177 from Provident, or pay a little more for a B.U. coin. They also have free insured shipping. So that's $22 over spot delivered to your door.
Made it to that other coin store today, they didn't have any Gold Eagles but they did have tons of maples and krugrands (several tubes full of them). I ended up with a 1985 gold Maple Leaf for $1195 and about $25 face in junk silver for 12.5x face. Prices on most things were higher than at my usual LCS, but there was a lot more variety.
