I mostly buy just silver bullion, but started buying a few bullion coins that just really caught my eye. I think this is one of the coolest coins I have seen in awhile and love the presentation display box. Had to buy one. fairly limited run of 2,000. Not sure if it is a good investment or not, but hopefully will at least hold its issue cost. "The original government packaging with this item is very unique, as it has water filled cylindrical case that displays the coin through the clear plexiglass encasing the water." https://www.moderncoinmart.com/2015...inal-new-zealand-mint-packaging-sku34444.html
I didn't quite get the water case until I found another pic of it. Would suck if it ever leaked, evaporated out of it, or got scummy.
It's an interesting coin what with the packaging and all, but I don't know if it will hold it's value over the long run since it sold for $69 and silver is less than $17/oz. Chris
Stuff like this seems cool, yet they are making more and more "specialty, (kind word), coins every year. Will they hold their value long term? They never have yet. They were making tons of this stuff in the 70's, most of which can be bought for pennies on the dollar today. It may seem weird, but coin collectors have always preferred coins, not fancy packaging, not weird shapes, not colorized paint, but simple bits of stamped metal. Everything else might sound like it adds value, but in the end it doesn't. Just my opinion/view. If you like it, good for you man. You paid $69 and got $69 of fun out of it. For a long term asset like junk silver? I think you would be better off with 4 ounces of silver. So they can be two different things, one for investment and one for personal enjoyment. If they are thought of that way, I have no issue with any kind of coin that makes you feel good.
Yes it's more of a conversation piece than a investment. If it wasn't for it being limited to a 2,000 mintage I would have never bought it. Hoped the limited mintage will help retain its value. I actually saw the coin without the display, and thought it was really a nice piece, then later saw the display and that was what finally made me decide to pull the trigger. 99% of my silver hoard is bullion, mostly silver bars, and Silver Eagles the other 1% is oddball fun stuff with limited mintages.
I have never considered myself a "silver stacker", but a great many of my silver purchases were medals ranging from 85% (European) to .999+ (US). Almost all of these were purchased when the spot price of silver was less than $6/oz. In all, I have more than 500 ounces in silver medals, and since the purchase prices were so low, I have no reason not to hold on to these. Now, if silver should ever rise to $50/oz. again, I will probably start unloading some of them. Chris
Great looking coin!!! Mintage are key things to look at when you buy. Silver is good but Gold coin mintage are lower. Bullion coins with more 5oz - up to a kilo tend to have Lowest from all the World mints have better return. I have been told. Resale is tricky. I do like this set.
