I found this coin on the ground! The scratches don't seem to have any silver (nickel) coming through.

I've seen some references to other 'copper' nickels, but they were from far earlier (1980's and earlier)

    Thoughts anyone ?

    Thanks!

More than likely, it has toned that color from either general circulation, environmental contact or both.

Thanks for your reply. Out of curiosity, how can you discern that this is different than the ones that are not caused by general circulation or environmental contact?

It sure looks like the others that I have seen posted here that are considered errors

JimBob, you will note that I said "more than likely" and not that I was 100% positive. However, I've seen coloration like this on nickels that date back to the late 50's when I was a child, and we would hunt for change on the ground at a popular summer resort in Maryland.

What it boils down to is that this is my gut instinct based on collecting experiences dating back 55+ years.

    Here's something interesting I found: http://fortune.com/2014/01/15/is-america-ready-for-a-brown-nickel/
    (mine is a 2014)

Could it be that one of these got out into the 'Wild' ??

FurryFrog - that for your reply & input. Interesting that the 'dirt' is so evenly distributed across the front, the back and the edge, and that the color is also consistent across all three surfaces as well looking like a large penny, almost as if it were *made* that way....hmmm

I'll try and get it to a dealer and report back - Thanks everyone

JimBob. I search several bags of nickels a week. Yours is dirty or toned. Either from sitting on the ground like Chris said or from some other means. Sorry, but you don't have anything special.
