I heard a pretty good presentation on Russia about 6 months ago. The presenter strongly feels Putin believes Russia has like 5 years to remake the world to the way they want it due to the rapid aging demographics of his country. The birth rate has been so low for so long every year there simply are fewer and fewer potential soldiers available. Taking away a lot of his oil money probably hurts a lot worst than the sanctions.

Plus the average Russian male life expectancy is 64 due to heavy alcohol consumption. The big concern tho, the low oil prices will push Putin into a corner, forcing him to act. Perhaps a war in europe. He's certainly proven willing to do it.

not enough oversight or regulation of the russian market. I'd certainly wait until it appears the ruble turns around.

I find it mind boggling that the ruble devalued by 50% in just three months time. Can you imagine the chaos if that happened to the US dollar? Crazy stuff

I seem to remember that Russia was dramatically increasing gold reserves over the last few months - I guess that the writing was on the wall for the large decrease in the rouble value. Another example of politicians better able to prepare leaving their citizens to struggle to pay for essentials with less and less value to their money?

I can't imagine they have anywhere near enough gold to balance such a huge and sudden devaluation. We are talking dollar amounts in the trillions which is then hundreds of millions of troy ounces of gold bullion. I would be surprised if they managed to stockpile even a quarter of that.

They've also been using a lot of the gold reserves to buoy things up in their faltering economy with sanctions, and now oil dropping, a bad situation for the everyday Russian. The oligarchs, most of their wealth is probably in non-ruble assets so they don't really care.
