Am I the only one who has a hard time telling the difference between "large" and "small" date 1970 Lincoln Cents? Dang I feel dumb...

Yes, I think I know the diagnostics, but which one is really the KEY to telling? Is it the curl in the "9"? I really cannot draw a "mental" horizontal line to tell if the top of the date lines up.

 

It really can be difficult. So long as a coin is a typical large date or small date it's easy enough but every coin is unique and many of these are anything but typical. The horizon line doesn't work for me at all and these vary by die and strike characteristics. I don't have a lot of experience differentiating them by the "7" so won't comment on it. The strenght of the motto doesn't work because a few sm dt's are well struck here and many large dates are poorly struck. I use the curl of the "9".

But even if you use the curl there is a medium date coin that shows up in about 2% of mint sets that looks a lot like it. In the old days this medium date was recognized as being distinct but now it is generally considered just another version of the large date.

Once you see a few of these sm dt's they really aren't hard to tell apart in hand but photos can still throw me once in a while. Just study a few typical sm dt's and then they'll be easy enough to spot.

 

I'm the same way. I think if I held a small date in my hand, I would quickly learn the difference. On the other hand, it's easy to tell the difference between a small date and a large date 1960 penny. If the 1 is taller than the rest of the digits, then it is a small date. If the 1 is shorter then it is a large date.
