How does grading work?

Okay, I have plenty of graded coins and I really don't know what that changes about the coin value. For example, I have about 10 graded silver eagles and a few other graded commemoratives. They are in those cases that you can't really open.

What is the significance? If I were to sell them, do I charge more? What takes one from 70 to 69? I just need help understand the purpose if the bullion is worth its weight.

Differences between a 69 and a 70 are most likely not visible to the naked eye. The most important thing to be careful about with the graded coins is there are just a few companies that are universally respected, primarily PCGS and NGC. Other grading companies may or may not do a good job, but the market value is going to be discounted because it's not from one of the two I mentioned. Mostly, the value of the coin inside the capsule as opposed to the same coin not in the capsule is due to the perceived reliability of the grading company.

So, I take it, grading is more of a numismatic thing? Obviously, if they weigh the same amount then they have the same value... assuming the difference between the graded encased coin and the other is not a chunk of metal missing. So if the premium is higher because of the grading, that's more of a numismatic thing, right? Really, I'm just trying to understand the point.

I still think this is an undefined arena. If you can CONVINCE someone that it is worth 80 when most vendors are quoting 69, bully for you! Only the most informed of investors will be discerning in this environment. Everyone else is desperate to get out of fiat money and into metals.

I would have to agree. I know I'm not about to pay extra for a graded round. Just give me the silver and I'll give you spot plus a little bit for your troubles. That's it.
