How can you tell that silver is real?

It's hard to tell what's inside an unopened package, so if you don't scrape through to expose the innards, you're limited. You can first test it with a magnet, since iron and steel are magnetic whereas silver and gold and other materials are not. And you can determine the density of the object using Archimedes' principle. See how much water it displaces and then determine its density/specific gravity. If it's at least 10x as heavy as water, there is a fair chance it's silver; if it's not, I wouldn't waste money on X-ray testing because it's not heavy enough to be silver. Good luck

Thanks for the info Ginger. I am knew to all of this and want to make sure I do not get ripped off. I can see some people not being honest and wanting to try and take someone who does not have a lot of experience in silver.

I am learning to really look into things well before committing to something. I do take your advice to heart Ginger.
