I'm a fan of hiding coins in plain sight. Thieves look for obvious signs of value, such as safes, jewelry boxes, etc. My solution is to place some gold coins in a ziplock bag, then put that bag into a second ziplock. Make sure ALL the air is out of both bags. Then, locate a half-used can of paint which shows signs of use (drips down the outside, etc). Drop the ziplock bags into the paint, and they disappear beneath the remaining paint to the bottom of the can. Reclose the can and store wherever you keep such items...in a utility closet, garage, basement, etc. The metal can will foil metal detectors and who would ever think to steal a half-used gallon of paint?

Great idea Ginger. No one would ever suspect that. Do you really do this?

Yes! I have stored my gold bullions in the drawing room only. Nobody will suspect.

Store it in good quality coin books to prevent from wear and tear and also unnecessary damage to it.

Another good method is to store your coins in a locked chest and to store the chest in a hole underground (dig a hole in your backyard). This is only good for long term storage, and I believe that it is secure and keeps them safe.

Unless people can see you bury them, or can tell by the fresh dirt spot, they'd have to dig a lot or get very lucky. Might not be a bad idea.

That does sound like a good idea. But knowing my luck I would forget where I buried them at.

Storing these precious metals and bullion coins are always problematic. I normally store them in bank lockers. Here, in my place storing them in the house is very risky, and if things go bad can cost your life. Not saying that bank lockers are risk free, but they are the best option I got.

The problem is how would you react when a thief holds a gun to your, or a loved one's, head? Odds are you would give up your PM's in a heartbeat. The best thing is to not let anyone know that you have large amounts of PM in your house. This means that you don't discuss this with people that know where you live unless you know and trust them. My wife knows there is bullion in the house, but even she doesn't know where it all is and how much there is. I keep some in my desk in the study, that's what the wife knows about, the larger amount is hidden in the house where a metal detector wouldn't help to find it. Worse case scenario with a break in or armed robbery is that they get about 10% of my metal and leave thinking they got it all.
