Gold dollar pattern. They were trying to make the coin larger, (if you have ever held a gold dollar you know what I mean). People were just not ready for a holed coin here, though, it was decided.
At your age you probably have not been in the hobby long enough to see one come up for sale until now. This is a fine book and recommendation, sir, but is the 9th edition. If one wishes to invest in the book, the 10th edition, even if only for the color photos, is a better overall experience and worth the/any added price of admission (IMO, of course).
That's the only revision Jake's has and I was unaware of anything newer. Apparently the $14.95 price is a close-out price before they begin to stock the 10th edition.
