I agree... Check out "Generation Like" a report by Frontline. The idea of 'like' actually relates to this topic where marketing is concerned, and what can lie at the heart of commercialism that gets people into such activity and urging others to, "like, comment and subscribe" as so many vloggers, of all topics, not just unboxings of bullion, quote at the end of their videos.

I don't really think that whether its harmful or not is the right question to be asking. I'm a firm believer in the freedom of ideas and information and websites like Youtube (and CoinTalk too!) have done a lot to let people put their ideas, opinions, etc... out there for anyone and everyone to see. We, as individuals, are responsible for how we take those ideas and information. If someone wants to believe that they need to keep a pile of silver coins at home to help protect them from the Zombie Apocalypse, I believe they have a right to do that. They also have a right to tell others, and try to convince us that we should follow suite. Just as each one of us has the right to say it's nonsense.

I couldn't agree more Peter. All I added to the thread are harms that can come from it. It seems that many take the comments about the harms as criticism that people should be stifled or not allowed to make such videos or comments, but anything could be farther from the truth. As I said earlier, my comments are not intended to prevent anyone from expressing themselves. I do though believe, that many people who feel themselves individuals doing what they please and expressing themselves are not always in 100% control of their own actions, especially when commercial interests lie behind sites that allow people to be expressive. Certainly you support it because activity on your site, CoinTalk, generates content, page hits and the potential for ad revenue. There's more to it than just people expressing themselves. Hence the comments wherein harm can emerge from the activity.

I doubt that it results in much more activity here on CoinTalk than would otherwise, it probably drives away as many people as it attracts.

CT may not be as active nor profitable as other websites, and forums may be dumping grounds for voices online, but it is no less a site that relies on ads for some revenue and not freely given to us by your software purchases or requires access by individual paid subscriptions. My point is that you and this site are in this for some commercial aspect which informs your statements in this thread. I'm not saying its a massively profitable venture or that it's much more than something stemming from your collecting interests.

For those who go off the deep end or promote ridiculous view points, I have found a sanctuary in the ignore setting. I now sleep much better at night. :>)
