I have held back from metal purchase for 2 months setting aside for a Gold purchase. I am of the camp that views PM as insurance and wealth preservation. Not looking to flip it in my life.

I have it narrowed down to
    1. PAMP 1oz bar
    2. PAMP lunar 1 oz bar
    3. Maple Leaf.
    4. Canadian Call of the wild Howling Wolf

    My criteria
Something that retains its premium and has good liquidity if the need arises to sell
    Quality product

Would like to hear opinions especially if you own any of the above

I have very little gold. my personal favorite is Canadian Maple leaf. great color of gold. recognized everywhere. not to much premium. I am sure others in this site can give you better price advice. than me. :blackalien:

Maple Leaf (I have 2). High liquidity. Down the line, you won't have to convince anyone that's it's really gold. Ask yourself, with all the criminality in the marketplace, why would ANYBODY buy a gold bar??

And why pay a premium for the Howling Wolf? If gold doubles in the next 3 years, you will be howling, as the price of a Maple Leaf and a Wolf*will be exactly the same, all the premium evaporated.

*assuming it's one ounce - I can't find it in Krause to see the gold content...

Virtually no Mint products will retain their premium if gold takes off. You are either a stacker or a numismatist, it's hard to be both at the same time.

I have heard that U.S. gold eagles can be put into an IRA, although it requires a trustee, and I don't know the details. I would investigate the tax benefits, if any, before deciding. Personally, I want my gold in hand, not on the 11th floor of some building in Kansas City. Still, the tax advantage (in your situation) may be compelling.

to start I would go with coins over bars. coins are a lot harder to fake and so easier to sell for full value. the Maple is good and I like the Buffalo too. in bullion I think the .999(9) coins will be better going down the road. the maple is cheaper but if gold goes way up the extra $20 you pay for a Buffalo won't matter much.

I have 2 of those, I like them but they are a little harder sell. along those lines, that is not one of the "big 4" I like the 50 peso more. beautiful coin and the gold content is right on it. also low premium to buy.

Exactly... stick to major/reputable mints. Go with either an American Gold Eagle or Canadian Maple Leaf. Nice and easy to re-sell, no hassle trying to convince someone of authenticity.

I would prefer the American gold eagle because they are a much more durable coin compared to the 24k maple leaf

So it sounds like it come down to mint but also the type of coin. I would assume that the Maple and Call of the Wild would both be seen as safe. It comes down to whether a single year release 3 coin series is equal or better than a more well known no change coin.

Absolutely true! Although the Maple Leaf's look nice, they are harder to sell than US gold coins unless you're in Canada and the resale price is always gonna end up flat. The idea is to buy gold coins that don't have much of a premium and no premium is even better.

Then you should buy AGE products or perhaps if you are in TX, as here 50 peso mexican gold. Highest liquidity, premiums cancel out readily, so don't mess with collectible or foreign gold unless you really do want to flip. I would avoid like Anthrax gold IRAs. They are designed for the people handling it and not for the owner.

Thanks for an insight into the IRA question. Keep in mind that with large denominations, the only buyer(s) are likely to be very wealthy individuals and/or brokers; they will know it's a buyers' market and are likely to skin you accordingly. You won't be buying any week's worth of food, ammo, or gasoline with 50 Peso coins, as no one can make "change," or, they won't make change because it reduces their liquidity.

My often-expressed analogy is this: Today you can buy a quality loaf of bread for one silver dime. Hyperinflation comes, and bread goes to $4 per loaf. But a silver dime still buys a loaf of bread.

    Remember the statistic I posted in another thread; three consecutive years of 26% inflation DOUBLES the price level: 1 x 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 = 2.000

An earlier thread mentioned Buffalos. I never though of this option assuming a smaller market. I figured 24k gold shoppers would look at Maples. Do Buffalos do we'll if the need to sell arises

As we have discussed, everything depends on timing. The higher the price of gold, the less premium the seller will be able to recover. The stacker who diversifies with both gold and silver doesn't have as much to worry about. The gold (even 1 ounce) is the major protection against hyperinflation, while junk silver provides liquidity for barter and very small purchases.

Having said that, I should stop buying junk silver and acquire more gold, just for the sake of that worthwhile diversification. But I never would have purchased 1-ounce gold coins as my only PM holding.

Given your choices, I'd probably go with a newly minted Maple with the security mark and call it a day. However, personally, I prefer the appearance of the AGE. I can appreciate the design on 'both' sides. Plus, with some extra metals added in, it's more durable for handing outside the capsule (for those special moments :D)
Of course the premium is higher and some might only want stuff that's pure gold.

Makes ZERO difference whether you buy 0.999 or 0.9999 gold. It's just an excuse to goose the price.

Ever think of old US gold? Or are you buying strictly for bullion value?
