How do you stack your gold?

Lets say your target (depending on price) is 2 oz a year. I know people say get the most metal which means low premium and larger coins. However when it comes to part with it you want high premiums.
Lets assume new modern coins. No circulated things from pre 33
How: Do you just say two 1 oz coins or spread it over the year and say four 1/2 oz coins
What: Generic, AGE, a .9999 world coin. Or do you mix it up for variety.

Also, does anyone mix in Gold Sovereigns. Do they maintain their preiums and do Americans generally buy them.

Personally I mix and match, and usually keep it to 1/4 or 1/2oz at a time. I tend to not like 1/10oz, they're just too small physically and I always worry about losing one. I happen to like sovereigns, and old bullion quality ones you can get for a very little premium over spot. I feel there's a decent market for them, as well as krugerrands- those to me are two of the most well known gold around the world aside from the AGE and Maple Leaf.

I like the fractionals because I think they're more liquid, as I think you're more likely to get back the premiums because you can sell to individuals rather than a dealer who will purchase further below spot so they can make their turnaround. I tend to believe you have a larger resale pool since most can afford $325 for 1/4 oz, while $1300 is a little harder to come by - you're more likely to have to go to a dealer or large buyer for that. But, that's just my opinion.

Why would I share that here? There are such things as state secrets, how much, what denomination etc. Not your problem, only mine.

I think there's plenty of ways to offer some answers to the OP's questions without sharing "state secrets"... you can leave out how you have 1000 grams of Pamp bars hidden by being sewn into the linings of your pet beds... ;)

Fair enough. You don't want to show your hand. Lets change it up a little. Lets say you want to buy 2 oz every 100 years. Would you wait 50 years to buy each coin OR....maybe get a half ounce coin say ever 6 Presidential administrations? And oh yeah....variety or the same sort of things each century?

Personally I think you are better sticking to full ounce coins if it has to be modern. They are by far the most common size, as well as the most economical per ounce. If I wished to do such a thing, I would find a series or two I wanted to collect and buy each issue every year. Maybe pandas and buffalos.

A few years ago, like 2005 - you could get lightly circulated $20 Libs and Saints fresh off the shipment from Europe from Heritage for 2-4% over spot. I thought they were a neat form of "bullion" and even with the recent dips in the price of gold - they are still worth 2.5 X what I paid for them back then.

I stick to 1 ounce coins, either US Eagles or Buffalos depending on the price I can get. I dont care about the year since its all bullion to me. The reason I stick with US coinage is I think it has a high reputation for quality and consistency, and by the time I am ready to sell my gold, I dont want any problems trying to convince the buyer that its real. There are probably better deals out there on gold bars from private mints, but I not sure in 50 years how I can prove its solid gold (without cutting the bar all up).

The reason I go with 1 ounce is because as Medoraman said, the premiums on 1/2 or 1/4 ounce coins just seem too high to me. Better to save up your money and buy a full ounce in my opinion.

    Just my 2 cents.

If I were buying gold, I'd keep it simple and stick with popular govt. mint issued bullion coins (US Mint, RCM, Perth)... and avoid the higher premium fractional coins.
I've seen the Maple and AGE at a local dealer and preferred the AGE. Both sides looked cool and the 22kt purity makes it less fragile.

Yeah! Same here. You don't have to reply to his tread. I think it's ignorant to reply with that comment. No need to get all defensive.

For gold and platinum I look for the lowest mintage eagles and certain collectible world bullion coins mainly in the 1/10 oz size.

1.5 oz. And I keep them in my safe. I don't have much. I stack silver since it's a lot cheaper. ;)
