So I am 30 today and I have a $25 savings bond from when I was born that has now matured. I will get about $115 from it (how is that for return on investment???...lol) along with a bit more cash from my birthday for a total of about $150. I'm trying to decide to either: a) Finish out my Canadian wildlife series (need all but the wood bison) b) Buy 7 generic Sunshine Mint rounds c) Buy a 2014 1/10 oz AGE or d) Buy a 2014 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leaf What would you do?
From your choices above, I would go with silver from the Canada series. Here's my reasoning: 1) buying gold in such a small quantity will require you to pay a huge premium; save up your money and buy a full ounce of gold rather than small fractional amounts 2) I prefer silver from government mints like US or Canada; in 40 years when you go to sell your silver, will the Sunshine Mint still be in business? Will you be able to convince the buyer that its real silver? I would rather not have that hassle. Just my opinion. Or you could take the money and spend it on booze and cigarettes, either way.
I've spent 90% of my money on wine, women and song. The other 10% was foolishly wasted. I think that is a Mark Twain..... But as to the question, I would go for a 5 oz puck as well
That was not one of the original poster's choices listed, but I happen to agree. The 5oz pucks are nice, and if you subscribe directly from the US mint site (like I did), you can get a 10% discount off the subscription price.
Happy Birthday...and do the one that makes you the most happy...celebrate, that's what birthdays are for
By the way (and I am obsessing now), if it were me, I would want to feel like I actually got something for my birthday. Have you ever held a 1/10th ounce gold coin? It doesnt feel like much. By comparison, it is smaller than the size of a Dime. Compare that to the 5 ounce pucks which are a beefy 3 inches in diameter! No contest.
I kind of disagree with you here. When I put 7 1oz silver rounds vs 1 1/10th eaglet, I see the power of gold...that little popper has the same value of 7 of these....that's power
ONLY way to go? Um, I disagree with that. Its a way to go, but is assuming that you will be getting better returns with the "low mintage US" part rather than the "bullion" part. Historically, this has been very hit or miss. You could buy an extra ounce of silver with the premiums these demand. Will the 5 ounce ATB have a better return than 6 ounces of silver? Maybe, maybe not. I just wouldn't classify it as the ONLY way to go.
Thanks for the input everyone. I totally forgot about the 5oz pucks. I love the ATB designs but I don't like the fact that it is basically a giant quarter. I wish they would have done a different obverse for them. I have been itching to get one though just to have. I currently do not own any gold and that is why I am thinking of getting the 1/10 AGE. I know the premiums are high on them but I do like the design and like the idea of owning at least a little gold. But I do love that wildlife series. AHHH CHOICES!
You don't have to look at the other side. I got my first pucks this year after being on the fence about them since they were released. I really like them. If your budget were higher I would get a gold coin, simply because I prefer gold to silver. But for the budget I think you will enjoy the puck more, and (again, just my opinion) it's a lot more impressive to show off.
I'd take $10 to the LCS every week and pick out the best dates / grades in Barber Dimes you can find in the 90% silver box until the money's gone. Then you'll be well on your way to a Barber dime set, while not having paid much of a premium for them. Barber Dimes bring almost no premium over melt, and are a pretty realistic set to assemble. You'll get nearly all of the silver in the dimes that you'd get in bar form, and a lot more satisfaction along the way.
