So I recently purchased my first Silver Bullion in the form of two 1oz bars and a silver eagle. I also bought these cheap storage boxes for each of them since well they were just that, "cheap". So my question is how should I store these items. I didn't realize the silver bars would come in the sealed clear plastic so it seems taking them out of their package just to place them in the airtite plastic case would be kind of a waist. For the Silver Eagles would it be better to buy the individual air tite coin holders and then place those in a tube or do you think this container is okay. Since I only have one at the moment I know I will be opening up the case multiple times in order to add more to it. I am scared this may scratch of the edges of the coin since it is a really tight fit. Any help for this newbie would be greatly appreciated
Keeping these as bullion you shouldn't sweat it too much. I think that tube for the ASEs will be ok. I keep my bullion ASEs in a used Dansco because it looks cool and I don't have that many ASEs. Hold on to the Ait-Tites for the bars because you might come across some ones not in a cover.
Cool, thanks for the info currently I have the bars just laying in the case since they don't fit in the slots with the covers on them. So I'll just keep them there and if I get any without covers I'll slowly fill up the slots.
I'd have to agree with the others. Bullion and numismatics are usually seen as two different things. You will come across some artistic or older "collector" bullion pieces you may want to protect in some way to protect the art that's on them. However, most bullion is just bullion and doesn't need to be worried about protecting. Numismatics and collector coins is where things like rubbing, clanking, gases, air, and chemicals are a concern
That is the info I was getting from looking around online the last few weeks but figured I'd ask to doubly safe
I just ordered these types of storage for my silver bars: Plastic sleeves: http://www.ebay.com/itm/40x-SILVER-...379?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a8bd23d0b Silver bar tubes: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-10-C...208?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cdb1d5848 I ordered them from JP's Corner and am expecting delivery tomorrow or Monday. Will let you know how they work, but I expect them to hold the few bars that I have nicely. Now, most of my silver bars are "art" bars at the moment so I do care about at least putting them into the plastic sleeves. Not too concerned about being more protected such as in an Air-Tite. However, if you do want to go the Air-Tite route, they do make plastic tubes for them: Silver Eagles: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-Cap-Tube-...270?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f2752cc16 Looks like you might have the bar one already but: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Bullion-V...800?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35d1bd8768 Again, just using ebay as an easy search meduim, you can pick these up online at a lot of places.
What do you want it to look like later. If you want it to stay white and not have finger prints and tarnished edges and rims, the first thing you need are cotton gloves. Yup, you're too late with the eagle you have in your bare hands. Secondly, if you want it to stay looking as close as possible to how it looks the day you get it, buy airtites for rounds you buy. Wearing a cotton glove, put them in the airtite and they will continue to look very close to what they do the day you receive them.
You've already handled the Eagle, so you can't really undo that. You can dip it if you just prefer the new look; or you could just wait for it to tone over time and let it develop some character... either way it will probably be worth the same 10 years from now,,, Spot plus a couple bucks. If this were a Panda or something that might appreciate over time. I would handle with cotton gloves and put in airtite immediately. (Pandas come in airtites to start with.. so)
Personally I use air-tite capsules for all my bullions coins. If you buy them in bulk they're relatively inexpensive. I keep the encapsulated coins in coin trays that I bought from Lighthouse Publications. The trays are a little bulky and take up a lot more space than tubes do but I love being able to see them easily at a glance I also keep them in a cool dark area with silica gel dessicants to help absorb any moisture in the surrounding area.
Depends on the type of bullion. For the few ASE's I buy, I just keep them in whatever they arrived in and throw them into a box. For things like Pandas and some Britannias I might put them in airtites. I've sold a few Pandas for anywhere from 2x's to 5x's what I paid because they seem to be more popular and limited than ASE's and thus sell better.
