Well, that's disappointing to hear. There's 3 five-star reviews on Apmex. One raved about how the wavy lines created a cool lighting effect. The lack of milk spots, scratches & dings is good news. I plan on getting some to check out just because it's a new tweaked design.
How bad could they really be? they're pretty pure recognizable bullion that is cheaper than "junk silver". I sure wouldn't pay more for some ugly like a philharmonic.
Hmm, I always see philharmonics cheaper than maple leaves on comparesilverprices.com. I haven't seen them more expensive than maple leaves.
I have one of the 2014 bullion (radiating lines) coins I bought just to see it in person. I think they look fine, and I can appreciate the security feature. The "25" silver bullion coin is on it's way to me and I believe that it will lack the radiating lines...I will update as soon as it is in hand.
I bought one a few days ago, (basically to apologize to Treehugger and be able to give him a hands on opinion). Eh, to me it reminds me of a reverse proof coin, which I really do not care for. So, if you LIKE reverse proofs, then I think you will like this coin. If you do not care for them, then I think you will not like this one either. Is it a good idea to thwart counterfeiters? Maybe. Nothing is stopping from them to continue to crank out 2013 and early fakes of maple leaves, so manybe this helps the mint, (spurring more sales of 2014 coins), than collectors really. Overall, I simply stick to buying either junk silver I feel I am pretty knowlegable in, or bullion only from reliable suppliers. Even slabs cannot help you since they are being faked as well, and if a coin is in a fake slab its much harder to spot the fake coin. If you collect world bullion, the change does make the coin more distinctive.
I picked up two of them yesterday. I like the idea behind the design changes, I guess I was expecting more wow factor out of them.. I'd give them 4 out of 5 stars.
I finally got my order. They are "reverse-proofy". The queen is a shiner making the lines look dullish. The Leaf and the Lines play real well together and look great together. Of course, it will be harder to fake these. They did not disappoint me. All of the photos I have seen make them look real bad; but, in hand, they are pretty. And no milk spots yet.
did anyone pick up one of these 2014 limited mintage of 20,000 tribute bullion maple leafs? i received mine today, i gotta say these look amazing. oh, and i almost forgot, i received serial number 15/20,000....which means nothing really, but really made my day
If they are as busy looking as I'm guessing they are and if they have that wagon wheel spinning effect, they might end up causing seizures.
nope. it is a reverse proof-ish design....no starburst seizure effect...they really do look great, i would argue that the relief is a little deeper too
I just got the coin yesterday and I have to say that I did like the new design. I don't see it taking away from the clean design of the maple leaf but enhancing it. Just like any other piece of art beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Been buying these lately. Overall, I think the design is fine. I'd prefer the Maple side without radial lines, however, appreciate the privy security mark. Premium in the $1.79-$1.99 range seems reasonable (lower than last year). Condition wise, mostly fine.. a few with scratch marks under the micro ridges and on Queen's face, but, overall pretty good.
That's a shame but it's also the reason I stick to only buying ASE's. They sell better and either way you look at it Maple Leaf Silver is foreign. Foreign silver loses money, just my 2 cnts.
Yes, ASE tend to cost more than SML, but, when selling them locally, get a higher premium and probably more slack on condition. I prefer the shiny radiance of SML, but, also like the quality and recognizability of ASE. Plus, ASE sound really sweet on the ring test.
Yes, I have seen it, and I agree with you I was underwhelmed. I have not been very impressed with Canadian mintages lately. I got a few 1.5 ounce polar bears and was not very impressed with them either. Meh, its bullion, but I like to be excited about my purchases, not disappointed.
