Sad story about a young soldier who had put every cent into PM only to have it taken away from him.

Guys, seriously be careful and think about physical security. As much as I love my coins, this is a very, very real threat. I never wish to learn about a CT member who gets all of his pm taken away from him, ESPECIALLY if this is his only savings.

As much as I would love to have more pm, and as much as many people hate "paper" assets, and as much as I would love to have my coins in my home with me all of the time, there are really, really good reasons to have physical pm stored in a more secure facility, and having diversity of assets. Just like no one should ever invest in only one asset, should you really have all of your pm in one location?

Just wanted to start some people thinking on the subject. If you have a lot of your money in a physical asset, you should always be thinking about the security of that asset, especially something as small and portable as pm.

    Be safe guys.

$200k in PMs and his safe was opened like a coke can.... take a 1oz gold bar and buy a new safe and some cameras for the house....

Sure it sucks that this person had this done to them and their belongings but as you said, if you're going to store PMs at your home, they need to be stored securely.

Hope they find the DBs that did this....

Sorry, but that is an utterly reprehensible statement. I was in the first gulf war, are you going to talk about MY "profits from killing" while serving my nation in the military? I am 6'3", 240 pound ex-military. You want to say that to my face?

It's not a good idea to store all of one's precious metals at home, even in a large, heavy safe. Any safe can be opened with enough skill and determination.

Now digging a deep hole and putting them in there might be a better idea, but that can bring its own problems. A safety deposit box, especially in a small bank or credit union, seems like a good idea.

The story about this Australian is certainly sad, and made me angry. And that comment you replied to was, umm, not a very bright one. ;) But I wonder whether the profession of the theft victim would have appeared in the headline if he had been, say, a doctor or a sales rep. And yes, it certainly is not a good idea to invest all or most of one's money in gold or silver ...

Safe deposit boxes are really cheap. Mine costs less than $3 per month.

I understand sir, and I thought it odd they would make a note of it. A vet should not receive special pity because he is a vet. I feel as bad about anyone having this happen to. I took offense, (most likely too much offense), at the "profit from killing" thing. I apologize if I overreacted, I am simply sensitive to anyone suggesting soldiers kill for fun. They are defending their country, and serve as directed. I have been against all of the US wars the last 13 years, but would never blame someone doing their duty.

Btw, I wonder if that person ever thought that this soldier might be a medic or civil affairs soldier, sent to HELP the local people? Most soldiers are not infantrymen.

There is really no way you can securely store PM's in your own home. No matter what you do there are serious risks. A safe deposit box is the way to go.

Please folks, lets not have anyone break out the guns now, that does nothing to secure the PM's, they just wait until you are not home and steal your guns too.

I'll refrain from a political discussion on the merits of those conflicts due to CT policies.

Reprehensible is right. I felt that way even before knowing you served, which I never have, so rest assured the post from AWORDCREATED is offensive to more than just service members and veterans.

A written apology from him would go a long way toward softening that which was undoubtedly intended as a humorous quip, but instead ended up leaving the wrong impression . . . tasteless.

my mom had a sdb and due to a bank "mix-up" it was drilled and the contents "inventoried" in her absence. She wasn't exactly sure what all was in there because she added to it constantly but had never laid it all out to see. Had to sign a paper saying everything was accounted for, but she has no real way of knowing for sure.

Should it make a difference if said to your face? Your style of discourse is to threaten physical intimidation to influence or limit someones speech or ideas? You create your own stereotype and then walk right into it. You volunteered right?

That is a wimpy cop-out. You made a tasteless comment which IMO requires an apology.
