What's a fair price for common US silver coins

A dealer in town is selling pre 1964 silver dimes and quarters for 15x spot and halves for 16x spot. These seem like good prices for silver at the moment. What are your thoughts? Is this the best way to save a little silver?

Enjoy :) If my math is right those are quite reasonable prices.

Edit: P.S. I do prefer 'junk' silver over bullion for the history they contain ;) It comes down to personal preference. If one were to do everything "the best" or "perfect" that takes enjoyment and fun out of the hobby.

Coinflation.com lists the current value of the quarter at $3.65 and the value of the half at $7.30.

This is the current value, but if you can get a bunch of barbers or seated liberties for somewhat above this I would do it every time

Keep in mind Coinflation is constantly changing. I agree 15X is fair, today. When the crunch comes, you will be glad you bought junk silver instead of mint products, even ASEs. Dimes, Quarters, and Halves are the ideal size for barter, nobody has to "make change" for them, and you don't have to convince anyone they're really silver, like you would for bars, rounds, and ingots. Plus once in a great while you pick up a scarce date or a 30's or 40's AU/BU slider. Furthermore, the barter crowd is unlikely to allow any premium for Eagles, silver proof sets, or hockey-puck quarters, etc., although you PAID a hefty premium for them.

that's completely assuming everyone shares your paranoid dystopian view of the future and reasons for owning bullion. it gets old.

George orwell has a much older paranoid dystopian view of the future, as depicted in his book 1984, even older than that paranoid dystopian view of the future is Huixleys Brave new World.

From brave new world, while we do not have hatcheries for people yet, and the word mother does not connotate a bestial state of existance, we have seen the slippage of morals and the compartmentalization of knowledge, along with the reliance of many on pharmaceuticals to be happy and the end it not mend it mantra.

Mostly paranoid dystopian views of the future are never completely right, but often have elements of the future embedded within them.

and you're going to fight off all of that with some old roosevelt dimes?

lol...well it seems like this thread has taken an interesting turn. I tend to agree with doug444 in that junk silver is recognizable and seems to be the cheapest way to accumulate silver bullion atm. I am just setting aside $20 here and there in silver as a hedge. I like having something tangible in this day and age of electronic banking and mutual funds. Thanks for the conflation website. It sounds like 15x is what I should expect to pay when silver is trading for around $20/oz.

Well Big guy, to be honest I buy the junque silver not as some sort of political statement but more like a hobby, but the way I understand it is, that in some future scenario the feds money becomes inflated into worthlessness, wheelbarrows full of cash are traded for a loaf of bread, and that is just because the wheelbarrow is worth something.

But all is not lost, because we have collected junque silver now we do not need a wheelbarrow to carry our cash around with, instead surviving merchants accept foreign cash, and precious metals.

Now do I believe that is what is going to happen? I kinda sorta doubt it, but you gotta admit it has its internal consistency.

Let's see, FryDaddy -- were you expecting this chart to suddenly turn around??? Were you expecting the Chinese to stop buying 70% of the WORLD'S annual production of gold??? Were you expecting the poor to stay home and watch Reality TV when the welfare checks, Medicaid cards, and food stamps don't show up in the mailbox??? Can you think of a reason why DHS bought over a BILLION rounds of ammo???

do you read zerohedge a lot? I know some people who live like they're scared out of their wits who started reading that feed. that ammo story has been debunked., over and over again.
And why did you change the subject from silver to gold?

I don't read zerohedge at all, and I'm not "scared out of my wits..." I like to put a little gold and silver aside, and my PM's of choice are Canadian (gold) Maple Leafs and U.S. junk silver.

    ==========

"...Dixon said one of the contracts would allow Homeland Security to buy up to 750 million rounds of ammunition over the next five years for its training facilities. The rounds are used for basic and advanced law enforcement training for federal law enforcement agencies under the department's umbrella. The facilities also offer firearms training to tens of thousands of federal law enforcement officers. More than 90 federal agencies and 70,000 agents and officers used the department's training center last year.

The rest of the 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition would be purchased by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal government's second largest criminal investigative agency. "

    Close enough.

15x is a pretty good price for junk silver at $20 spot. 20 years ago you would have been around 13x at such a market level, but it seems we are running out of junk silver to a degree. There doesn't seem to be the volume of non-collectors with it coming in to sell anymore. Seems like most junk coins are already in the hands of collectors or dealers, so premiums are creeping up.

I agree with Medoraman. Junk in my neck of the woods isn't found at 15x or even 16x. If you look at eBay, it's much worse. I'm sure if you look around long enough, you'll get close to 15x with some patience and a little luck.

    Cheers

It is really important to understand the chart you posted means absolutely nothing. The buying power of the dollar is all relative. To put in in perspective, what if the powers that be did a 100 to 1 collapse of the dollar. You trade in all your $100 bills for the NEW One dollar bill and the purchasing power of the dollar is restored to above all time highs. What would have changed? Absolutely Nothing. Sure you could buy milk for 3 cents a gallon and silver for 20 cents an ounce, but big deal, instead of making $100,000 a year, your new salary is now $1,000 a year.

I really don't get why the stacker crowd makes such a big deal about this. It is totally and completely irrelevent.

There's a big difference between between moving a decimal point over in a controlled fashion and uncontrolled deflation or inflation.

The above chart is a great example of why not to sit on USD, it really has little to do with precious metals because PMs are just one of many things used to retain spending power.

Then the government bans the use of gold and silver. At that point, all you can do is tip your foil hat and say "well played sir".

Junk silver runs about 16x face right now at my LCS.
