It looks like Ebay has buyer protection. Has anyone had to use this when buying a coin. It seems like a peace of mind when buying something with a fear it could be a fake.

Ebay gives you 100% protection. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

I've had to use Buyer Protection a number of times -- I never received the item, or the item was significantly misrepresented, or the item was a counterfeit. In every case, I've gotten all my money back, including shipping fees. In the case of a counterfeit Walking Liberty half, I was not required to return the coin (since returning counterfeits to people who are selling counterfeits isn't the best way to get them out of circulation).

I've seen a few reports here from people who say Buyer Protection didn't come through for them. In some cases, they waited too long, or reported the problem incorrectly; in other cases, I'm not sure what went wrong. All I know is that I've never had a problem with it.

I am an ebay seller and the Buyer Protection Plan is excellent, I think that you have to wait 7 day's before making a claim. This gives the seller plenty of time to ship your item.

Yes, there are some "ifs, ands, or buts", but they are within reason.

I have never had any problems getting a refund, but most of my experiences have been with non-shipment. That is obvious and provable.

I've had two or three claims within the past year as a buyer.

I'm going through a $2,875 hiccup as we speak.

Good thing I purchased the coin via PayPal with my American Express and it helps I received a formal letter from PCGS stating the coin/slab are chinese counterfeits.

Most coin seller's on ebay with a high feedback and a return policy will be decent seller's, but the buyer protection adds the extra comfort when buying a coin/currency item. ;) I usually will not buy from someone who will not accept returns ~ this is just my feelings on buying on ebay.

I have been buying/selleing on ebay for 7 years with almost 2000 feebacks, I have never had a problem yet. As I stated I just don't buy any item without a return policy, good luck and happy collecting :)

Buyer protection is similar to buying a coin "on approval". Even if a seller states "no returns", the coin can still be returned for a full refund if it's SNAD. Directly from eBay's return policy:

Important: Even if you specify "no returns accepted," the item could still be returned if it doesn't match the item description

I bought $15,000 in silver and it was bogus. The guy never shipped. I never even cared too much as I charged it to a credit card and got it refunded before I ever saw the bill.

I once bought a baseball card from eBay, and it had a pinhole in it. I filed a Buyer Protection case and sent the card back to the seller. USPS "lost" the package (in quotes because it was found two months later), so eBay refused to accept the case. I was surprised, but, in many ways, I prefer this to the old policy where they immediately refunded the buyer without question.
