My favorite part of the coin is the edge. It's a frosted edge that says .999 5oz pure silver. It's pretty neat. My white mountain is waiting for me in my mailbox when I get home.
Almost bought another from provident today with the recent spot dip, but decided on their free shipping 10oz OPM bars instead. At these prices you can't go wrong with either! Especially with the silver to gold ratio being rather high right now and the summer slump, silver silver silver. Yeah these pucks are unique, the edges, size, etc. Makes ASEs seem like child's play silver. Those aren't "us coins" either!
Here's what I had waiting in the mail After comparing this one to my bullion versions, this one is hands down much nicer! There's no comparison.
I have some of both the bullion and the blasted and I like them in either version. Depending on the design, some look better in bullion and others in blasted. Some people drink Coke; some people drink Pepsi. Some drive Ford; some drive Chevy. It depends upon what you like. I like both the poor man's pucks and the rich man's pucks. Either way, I don't think you will be disappointed. For me, if the place being honored on the puck has significance to me, I don't mind spending the extra $60.00. If I really like the design of the puck, but the place is not significant to me, I stick with the bullion.
I love the level of detail these coins have. I have only purchased mint versions. Do you get the same detail with the bullion or does it get lost in the shinny finish.
I personally think some is lost. It would actually be best if they did a mixed version. For example, I have the 90% proof sets and those are a mixture of sandblasted/mirror and they look incredible. If the pucks would be like this they'd look 100x better In the 90% sets the background is mirrored and the design is sandblasted. They look awesome!
I have wished for this since the program began. A true proof (mirrored fields with frosted devices, as you mentioned) would be the ideal. I'm not sure how this would have affected the price though. The Mexican Mint does an outstanding 5-ounce proof Libertad for about $220.00 and the Perth Mint has done nice 5-ounce proof coins that it typically offers for over $400.00. I agree with you completely though. A true proof would have been the right way to do it from the get go. For the most part, though, I have discovered the Mint's idea of what would be the right way to go seldom coincides with my idea.
I have decided that an even better time to start buying more of these is when spot silver is ranging off $17. I'm a little bored of the ASE program and these might be a doorway into the next big thing. Or not.
Now that I have my first coin I'm thinking I'll probably buy others in the future. How are you storing the bullion versions? Are any of you using something like this? http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/oak-display-box-5-atb-5-oz.-capsules.html
Just ordered the Great Basin coin!! My 2nd 5 oz coin!!! I think I'm getting hooked lol. So now I seriously have to think about storage for these coins. How is everyone else storing them? My coins will be in air-tite capsules of course but beyond that are you using some kind of display box or case?
I'd like to buy that chest that holds 5 but since I plan to buy all of them it would take numerous chests to hold them all
